1991.09.26 :  Secretarial Commendation for Dave Thomas

       HHS Secretary Louis W. Sullivan, M.D., today honored 
Dave Thomas, senior chairman of the board and founder, Wendy's
International, Inc., with a secretarial commendation for
heightening public awareness about adoption, especially the
adoption of special needs children.
       "Dave Thomas, an adopted child, spends countless hours
raising awareness for children waiting to be adopted because he
firmly believes they all deserve the love and support of a
permanent home and family," said Secretary Sullivan.
       His efforts on behalf of adoption include initiating
company benefits for Wendy's employees who adopt and asking
Fortune l000 chief executive officers to establish similar
benefits for their employees.  
       Thomas is also working in partnership with HHS to sponsor
a national media campaign including a television public service
announcement and the placement of adoption awareness posters in
Wendy's 3,600 restaurants.
