In her new position, Ms. Rivas-Vazquez is the principal spokesperson for the department, serves as the public affairs liaison with the White House, and manages the press office, speechwriting division and Freedom of Information Act division.
Since 1998, Ms. Rivas-Vazquez has been the director of special projects in the office of the assistant secretary for public affairs. Prior to joining HHS, she worked at the Department of State as a special assistant to the United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations and as a member of Secretary Albright's transition team.
From 1993 to 1996, Ms. Rivas-Vazquez was assistant press secretary at the White House press office. She became deputy press secretary for the Clinton-Gore Re-election campaign in August 1996. Prior to joining the Clinton-Gore administration, she was a television news producer at WLTV and Univision, the Spanish language television network, in Miami, Fla. In 1988, Ms. Rivas-Vazquez was also a press aide at the national headquarters for Governor Michael Dukasis' presidential campaign.
Ms. Rivas-Vazquez has a bachelor's degree in government and a master's degree in Latin American studies from Georgetown University. She was born in Miami, Fla.
