The links are no longer being updated. 1993.06.02 : Health and Fitness Day FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Press Office Wednesday, June 2, 1993 (202) 690-6343 Free health tests and screenings, health and self-defense demonstrations and entertainment will be part of the Department of Health and Human Services' Family Health and Fitness Day activities Wednesday, June 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala will be among those participating in the activities, to be held in the Great Hall of the Hubert H. Humphrey Building, 200 Independence Ave., S.W. The annual event, geared to address many of the health, fitness and safety concerns faced by federal employees and their families, will promote the concepts of health and wellness focused on during National Employee Health and Fitness Day. Private industry, local and area government employees are welcome to take advantage of the health promotion and entertainment activities. More than 60 organizations will be on hand to answer questions, provide literature and health screenings. Free screenings cover vision, hearing and blood pressure by the Easter Seal Society; glaucoma by the Prevention of Blindness Foundation, and sickle cell by the Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease. Also available at no charge will be a podiatrist, dermatologist, chiropractor and pharmacist. There will be a $7 fee for the cholesterol screening, $5 for the body fat analysis and a small fee for makeovers and manicures. A stress counselor will be in attendance as well as experts in health care for children, adults and the elderly. From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., in the small auditorium, Sgt. Charles Yarbaugh of the Metropolitan Police Department, will conduct a "women only" session on self-defense skills techniques. Other scheduled events during the day, planned to be fun as well as informative, include: 10:00 a.m. Tai Chi demo by Dennis Brown from Shao Lin Wu-Shu 10:50 a.m. CPR demo by the American Heart Association 11:10 a.m. Aerobics by Becky Queen of Gymworks 11:30 a.m. Cooking demo -- healthy chocolate-cinnamon cake by Priscilla Powers, L'Academie de Cuisine, Inc. 12 Noon Slide aerobics by Heather Dillinger of the Center Club 12:25 p.m. Self-defense by Sgt.
