Shalala has announced the appointment of Kevin L. Thurm of New York City as chief of staff for the Department of Health and Human Services. As chief of staff, Thurm, 31, serves as a principal adviser to the secretary and has department-wide management responsibilities in an agency with the federal government's largest budget and more than 250 programs. Before coming to HHS, the former Rhodes Scholar served as the New York State director of the Clinton for President operation during the primary and of the Clinton-Gore general election campaign. Following the victory on Nov. 3, he joined the presidential transition as coordinator for the internal management of the transition clusters reviewing the executive branch agencies. In 1989-1991, he was an associate with the New York law firm of Cahill Gordon and Reindel. During 1983-1984, he was legislative assistant in the Boston office of State Rep. Stephen J. Karol of Massachusetts. Thurm was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., April 5, 1961. He received his bachelor of arts from Tufts University, 1983; was a Rhodes Scholar at Pembroke College, Oxford University, 1984-1986; and earned his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1989. He and his wife Suzanne have a six-month-old son, Eric. They are residing in Washington, D.C. ###
