Sullivan, M.D., has announced nearly $91 million in formula grants to 24 cities/metropolitan areas, an increase from the 18 grants awarded in FY 1992. In this third year of CARE grant awards, the six new grantees were New Orleans, La.; Seattle, Wash.; the Tampa-St. Petersburg, Fla., metropolitan area; Anaheim, Calif.; the Nassau- Suffolk, N.Y., metropolitan area; and Detroit, Mich. "CARE Act funds allow cities to provide vital services to those with AIDS," said Dr. Sullivan. "The 24 cities, which reported more than 65 percent of all U.S. AIDS cases, will each plan how best to meet critical local needs." The grants are called formula awards because of the automatic eligibility of cities reporting more than 2,000 AIDS cases, or a per capita incidence higher than .0025, to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control by March 31, 1992. The program is administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration, a U.S. Public Health Service agency within HHS. In determining grant amounts, both the number of reported cases and the city's population are taken into account. This year's grants, which ranged from $28.6 million for New York City, with more than 38,000 reported AIDS cases, to $955,000 for Detroit, with more than 2,000 AIDS cases. Grant funds will be used by the cities to provide outpatient medical support services for people living with AIDS and HIV. Services may include transportation of patients to care sites, home-delivered meals, hospice care, prescription drugs and a wide-range of clinical and medical care. Assistant Secretary for Health James Mason, M.D., said, "As the number of people with AIDS increases, services are needed more than ever. The Ryan White CARE Act responds to those needs. Since 1991, Title I awards have totaled $297.7 million." In addition to the formula grants awarded today, the 24 cities are eligible for an additional $91 million in supplemental grants, which will be awarded later in the fiscal year to cities demonstrating additional critical needs. One additional city that is eligible for a Title I formula grant--Ponce, Puerto Rico--has received a six-week extension to file its application. It is not included in the table that follows, which lists the FY 1993 CARE Act grantees, the number of AIDS cases each city reported to the CDC, and the grant amount: ### Eligible Metropolitan Areas 3/92 AIDS Cases Formula Allocation New York, N.Y. 38,326 $28,643,925 San Francisco, Calif. 11,912 11,462,925 Los Angeles, Calif. 14,567 7,818,374 Miami, Fla. 6,625 4,410,774 Newark, N.J. 5,523 3,542,848 Houston, Texas 6,258 3,471,981 Washington, D.C. 6,226 3,313,635 Chicago, Ill. 5,583 2,707,310 San Juan, Puerto Rico 4,233 2,540,586 Atlanta, Ga. 4,583 2,445,365 Ft.
