Planning for 2007 Activities: Foodborne Pathogens: Your Family's Health is in Your Hands
Consumers need to know simple steps they can take to prevent foodborne illness.
- Explain: What is foodborne illness? What are pathogens?
- Discuss: How pathogens affect your family's health; and, family members who are most vulnerable to foodborne illness (young children, older adults, pregnant women)
- Remind consumers of a few simple precautions, Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill are the ways to Be Food Safe.
- Then focus on the two viruses: Norovirus and Hepatitis A, two of the most common sources of foodborne illness.
- Finally, discuss the most effective way of preventing their spread: Handwashing.

Variety is the key. Activities such as food safety fairs, contests, parades, exhibits, workshops, educational fairs, supermarket tours, or educational materials translated into other languages can all help to make this September a celebration of food safety awareness.
