Congressional Support for Science Award

The Congressional Support for Science Award was established by IFT in 2001 to recognize outstanding contributions to science-based food policies, and to increase the role of science in policy development in order to enhance the safety, nutritional value, affordability, and variety of foods available to consumers.  Each year, IFT honors two Members of the United States Congress in recognition of their achievements and efforts in making food-related policies that are based on sound science.

Criteria

Presented to members of the United States Congress for their service in furthering the application of science and technology toward ensuring the safety and quality of an abundant food supply, both domestically and internationally.

Purpose

  • Recognize outstanding contributions to science-based food policy
  • Increase the role of science in policy development
  • Enhance IFT's role as the leading scientific and professional source of information related to food science and technology.

Eligibility

  • Member of the United States Congress

Selection Criteria

  • Outstanding contributions to science-based food policies and programs
  • Distinguished service as a legislator, policy maker, or advocate in advancin the role of science in food and agricultural policy
  • Sustained attention to the scientific integrity of food or nutrition issues

Process

  • Two awards will be presented annually with every effort made to select one award recipient from each major party and from each chamber of Congress
  • IFT will work with the recipient's staff to provide appropriate press activities, both nationally and locally in his or her state or congressional district
  • Awards will be presented in the spring at a reception hosted by IFT in Washington, D.C.
