Research Project: Mitigating Cotton Stickiness from Late Season Sucking Insects with Lalsil Cotton

Location: Cotton Ginning Research

Project Number: 6235-41000-006-17
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 01, 2006
End Date: Dec 31, 2009

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to determine the efficacy of Lalsil Cotton® live lactic acid producing bacteria in mitigating cotton stickiness from late season sucking insects on cotton produced in the arid Western United States.

Approach:
Lalsil Cotton® will be pre-mixed and applied at recommended use rates to sticky cotton lint samples as they enter the bale press at the ARS Southwestern Cotton Ginning Research Laboratory. Control samples will be handled in the same manner. Samples will be replicated and treatments randomized to make statistical analysis of the results possible. Half of the baled samples will be sent to the ARS Cotton Quality Research Unit, Clemson, SC for minicard analysis and half of the samples will be sent to IFTH (Institut technique du textile et de l¿habillement) in France for H2SD analysis, in both cases after waiting 20 (Twenty) days. Additional USDA-AMS HVI fiber quality measures will also be taken to measure the treatments¿ impact on lint value and spinnability.
