Bruce Quirk to Lead USGS Land Remote Sensing Program

Dr. Bruce Quirk has accepted the position as the Associate Program Coordinator for the U.S. Geological Survey's Land Remote Sensing (LRS) Program. Bruce comes to this position with more than thirty years of experience managing remote sensing investigations and applications for natural resources in both the United States and abroad. Dr. Quirk assumes this responsibility at a critical time for the civilian land remote sensing initiatives. The U.S. Geological Survey is leading discussions and planning for the next generations of civilian remote sensing satellites, through the Landsat Data Continuity Mission and the Future Land Imaging proposals. The Survey's Land Remote Sensing Program, under Dr. Quirk's leadership, is the focal point for that leadership within the Department of the Interior.

Bruce's Ph.D., from the University of Wisconsin (1981), dealt with remote sensing methodologies and land cover. His undergraduate degree (1975 with honors) was also from the University of Wisconsin. He began working at the Survey's EROS Data Center in 1982 for TGS Technology, Inc. and since 1990 has been employed by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Bruce has published numerous articles in the field of remote sensing, and has served as the principal instructor for remote-sensing classes both domestically and internationally. He has a long list of awards from the USGS and NASA. He has been a member of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing since 1975 and was the President of the Dakota Chapter from 1988-1991.
