Severe Weather Facts

Tornadoes occur during each month of the year with the peaks across Nebraska between May and July, April and June in Kansas.   Tornadoes are most likely between between the hours of 3 pm and 9 pm, but have been know to occur at all hours of the day!

Lightning can be deadly!  You are at a greater risk when outdoors, especially under tall objects such as trees; either in or around bodies of water, or on hilltops.  Lightning heats the air near the lightning stroke to around 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit!  That is hotter than the surface of the sun.

Flash Flooding is the #1 weather related fatality in the United States!  Flash flooding events usually occur during the afternoon and overnight hours (just about the same time as thunderstorms).  Most people who have lost their lives were in automobiles (it takes only about 2 feet of water to make an automobile float).
