USDA Awards $5 Million In Food Stamp Participation Grants WASHINGTON,
Sept. 7, 2006 - Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns today announced five grants
totaling $5 million have been awarded to grantees in Virginia, California,
Georgia and Alabama to help increase access to USDA's Food Stamp Program for
low-income households.
"These grants are part of President Bush's efforts to help those who are
eligible to enroll in the Food Stamp Program," said Johanns. "Partnerships with
state and local governments as well as faith and community-based organizations
help give families access to needed nutrition assistance. We are committed to
simplifying access, while maintaining the integrity of the program."
The participation grants focus on efforts to simplify both the application
process and eligibility systems and complement the outreach grants announced on
August 28th. Each grantee plans to implement strategies that improve customer
service by allowing web-based applications and development of application sites
outside of the traditional social services office.
The five grantees are: San Francisco Human Services Agency, in partnership
with faith and community organizations; The State Information Technology
Consortium (SITC), in partnership with the Virginia Department of Social
Services, the Virginia Legal Aid Society, and the Virginia Department for the
Aging; Georgia Department of Human Resources, in cooperation with the Georgia
Department of Aging Services and Christ Lutheran Church; Angel Food Ministries
in Alabama; and, California Statewide Automated Welfare Systems C-IV Project, in
partnership with community organizations.
Additional information about each project is available online at

support to working poor and needy households. The program serves more than 25
million people. For more information on the Food Stamp Program and USDA, visit
