OSHA Hazard Information Bulletins

February 21, 1989
MEMORANDUM FOR: REGIONAL ADMINISTRATORS
THRU: LEO CAREY
Director Office of Field Programs
FROM: EDWARD J. BAIER Director Directorate of Technical Support
SUBJECT: Health Hazard Information Bulletin on Cadmium Overexposure in the Aircraft Repair Industry.

The Atlanta Regional Office has brought to our attention a potential health hazard in the aircraft servicing, repairing and maintenance industry resulting from exposure to cadmium dust. An inspection of an Eastern Airlines landing gear shop revealed employee exposures to 85 times the ceiling limit (0.5 mg/m(3)). Unventilated grinding activities to cadmium plated landing gear components were the cause.

Based on this information compliance offices should be a alert to the fact that similar operations with potential overexposures to cadmium exist in other airline maintenance facilities. Gear maintenance work is not only performed by the airlines but by outside companies that provide this service to the airlines.

Please distribute this bulletin to Area Offices, state-and States and Consultation Projects. Additionally, Regional Administrators shall identify companies in their regions that repair aircraft landing gears and related components, primarily in SIC Codes 3728, 4511 and 4582; 1972 SIC Manuals and provide them with copies of OSHA PUB 6-1. 4A, entitled Protective Measures for Controlling Exposure to Cadmium.
