Kona, Hawaii, District Conservationist Jeff KnowlesKona, Hawaii District Conservationist Helps Afghan Farmers
"Traveling to the remote districts within Afghanistan’s Ghanzi Province is like a carnival ride – 60 percent bumper car, 20 percent tilt-a-whirl, and 20 percent slow motion roller coaster," said Jeff Knowles, Kona District Conservationist for NRCS in Hawaii.  Jeff recently received the U.S. Army Commander's Award for Public Service – the fourth-highest honor that can be awarded to a civilian.

NRCS Assistant to the Chief Gary Mast and more than 80 Federal, State, and local officials recently attended the dedication ceremony for the Sandy River Dam removal in Norridgewock, Maine.  NRCS technical assistance along with funding through the NRCS Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program and other sources can be credited for helping open up 52 miles of unimpeded passage for Atlantic salmon and other migratory fish from Norridgewock to Smalls Falls.

Starting in September 2005, Cora Olson and three other Smith College engineering students worked for eight months as Earth Team volunteers restoring anadromous fish access to spawning and rearing habitat in the Town River channel near West Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

This national bulletin is to remind States of Activity Based Costing – 2006 (ABC-2006) Initiative.
