Thanks in part to NRCS engineering assistance and Public Law 566 Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Program funding for the Snake River Watershed Project, the residents of Warren, Minnesota, were spared serious flooding when the Snake recently crested five feet over flood stage.

Through the cooperative efforts of Vermont landowner Ruth Shumway, the White River District, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and NRCS, over 4,600 feet of riparian area along the Second Branch of the White River in Randolph has been enhanced in through a Wildlife Habitat Restoration Agreement.

firebreak in Alabama -- NRCS imageUSDA Announces Funding Availability To Construct Firebreaks in Hurricane-Stricken States
USDA will provide Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) Program funds to help communities in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama protect life and property from fires.  A firebreak is a strip of bare land or vegetation that slows down or buffers a fire.  The firebreaks will be funded with a portion of $300 million in supplemental appropriations approved by Congress in December 2005 for six hurricane-stricken states.  NRCS will pay landowners and landusers up to 75 percent of the costs, or up to $150 per acre, to remove dead or dying timber adjacent to important community structures, such as schools and homes.

Missouri NRCS State Biologist Pat Graham and Kentucky NRCS Webster County District Conservationist Mike Andrews were recently recognized by Quail Unlimited and the Southeast Quail Study Group for their outstanding action in helping implement and promote the Northern Bobwhite Conservation Initiative (NBCI) .
