Welcome to the National Biological Information Infrastructure's Digital Image Library. Here you will find a diverse range of images related to nature and the environment. Our current and future collections contain images associated with plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms, along with scenic landscapes, wildlife management, environmental topics, and biological study/fieldwork. You may browse our subject categories or search for specific images using the search feature. Each image's metadata record contains valuable information about the image, e.g., scientific name, description, location, and/or date.

Our Mission
The mission of the NBII’s Digital Image Library is to help support the research and understanding of our environment by providing a diverse range of high-quality biological images -- linked to detailed information -- for scientists, conservationists, decision-makers, educators, students and the general public worldwide. Thus, not only can one find beautiful images, but also images of rare animal behaviors, methods in managing invasive species, changes over time in landscapes, and characteristics useful for species identification. Validated information about each image may include common and scientific names, detailed descriptions, specific dates and times, and geographic location, as well as photographer and contributing partner names. The NBII makes available these images from its own collections and from NBII partners. Most of the images are public domain, but all allow at least educational or other nonprofit uses.

Future images, and the tools to find them with
We are continuing to develop our library in order to serve your needs for remarkable, credible images. As such, we are creating advanced search features, the capability to link related images, the ability to download an image's metadata record, and more. And our library continues to grow - we have a number of new contributions being brought onboard, so visit again to see what new species and subjects make their way into our system. Our site will grow and evolve with our partner and audience needs.
