The National Forests in Mississippi encompass 1.2 million acres of public land located in six diverse National Forests across the state. Each National Forest has unique woodlands, lakes and streams, wildlife, recreation opportunities, economic importance, and contributions to social values. However, the broad, strategic direction for managing all of these forests is combined into one statewide Land and Resource Management Plan, which we commonly refer to as the Forest Plan. We had started the process of revising our Forest Plan when a new rule was issued in early 2005 to improve the process, and we have adopted this new approach to completing the revision.

Many changes have occurred since our first Forest Plan was completed in 1985. Our technical capabilities, scientific knowledge, and understanding of the environment have advanced, and traditional economic uses of the forests have shifted. As populations increase, changes in our communities, lifestyles, and social values affect how we use our forests. The new Forest Plan revision process is intended to be more adaptable to changes, more efficient, and more collaborative in developing goals for the future.

In revising the Forest Plan, we want it to reflect the changing needs and values of those who have a stake in our future. This web site will provide updates on the process, the latest reports, background information, announcements of public meetings, and opportunities to be involved. If you have an interest in the management direction of our National Forests in Mississippi, we would like to hear from you. Please send us your comments, requests, and feedback.
