Rural Development

Rural America is diverse, with different places facing different conditions. Consequently, rural communities adopt a wide array of development strategies that address their particular needs. These strategies involve several basic components, including infrastructure improvement, business assistance, education and training, amenity-based development, and community development. Local-based strategies often draw on funding from Federal and State governments.

Rural Transportation At A Glance—This brochure provides the latest information on transportation in rural America. Topics covered include the condition of roads and bridges, the effects of deregulation, devolution of Federal transportation responsibilities to the States, increased Federal funding, and heightened security concerns.

Education as a Rural Development Strategy—As the demand for workers with higher educational qualifications rises, many rural policymakers have come to view local educational levels as a critical determinant of job and income growth.
