5-year Review of the Pima Pineapple CactusAbout the Document Title: 5-year Review of the Pima Pineapple Cactus Estimated Dissemination Date: December 16, 2005 – June 16, 2006 About the Peer Review Process The Service has elicited comments from independent scientific reviewers. An announcement in the Federal Register was published on February 2, 2005 (70 FR 5460), soliciting new information on Pima pineapple cactus (PPC) from the public. Of specific interest to us (FWS) were two recent studies of geographic variation in characters that included PPC. These two studies reached different conclusions regarding the taxonomic status of PPC. As part of the public notification process, we initiated a formal peer review of the two taxonomic studies and solicited comments regarding the methods and conclusions of each study. Peer reviewers were chosen based on their knowledge and experience with Arizona flora, expertise in taxonomic analyses, affiliation with local herbaria, and expertise in Cactaceae taxonomy. Formal requests for peer review were sent to 21 individuals, 10 of whom provided comments. Date of Peer Review: February to May 2005 About Public Participation The peer review plan is made available on this website in order to allow the public to monitor our compliance with the Office of Management and Budget’s Final Information Quality for Peer Review.
