School Breakfast Pilot Project

On May 15th, 2000, the U.S. Department of Agriculture formally announced the selection of six school districts participate in the School Breakfast Pilot Project. The participants are:

  • Harrison County School District - Gulfport, Mississippi
  • Independent School District of Boise City - Boise, Idaho
  • Santa Rosa City Schools - Santa Rosa, California
  • Shelby County Board of Education - Columbiana, Alabama
  • Washington Elementary School District - Phoenix, Arizona
  • Wichita Public Schools - Wichita, Kansas

Many factors were considered when reviewing the 386 applications that were received. Some were explicitly stated in the authorizing legislation, while others were required in order to maintain the integrity of the study design, eliminate confounding variables, and facilitate study implementation. The selected sites provide a mix of rural, suburban, and urban schools, with varying family income levels.
