acres and is also known as “The Lab”. BNL is managed by Brookhaven
Science Associates (BSA), and is under contract to the U.S. Department of
Energy (DOE). BNL is part of a national laboratory system dedicated to
the international advancement of science. Our mission is to support DOE research and technology development through our leading edge user

Two locations are for use by everyone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The ATM accepts credit and debit/ATM cards that are in the following
networks: CIRRUS, HONOR, NYCE, and PLUS. The amount that you can withdraw
using the ATM depends upon your bank's limit. If you have any
questions about the on-site ATM, then contact the on-site branch of Teachers
Federal Credit Union at ext. 2790, Monday through Friday.
You may cash paychecks at Teacher's with a BNL ID card.
TFCU members may cash Travelers checks, in whole dollar amounts only (ie. $20, $50, & $100).
Travelers checks in foreign currencies cannot be cashed on-site. You may do so at a commercial bank or at the airport.
TFCU offers free checking, share savings, and money market
accounts, as well as travelers’ checks, VISA credit cards,
loans, mortgages, and share certificates of deposit. Laboratory
employees, facility-users, and guests with BNL identification
cards can cash BNL payroll checks at TFCU. The credit union,
however, cannot cash personal or traveler’s checks unless you
are a TFCU member.
All BNL and BSA checks can be cashed at Teachers Federal Credit
Union with proper identification regardless if you have an account.

BNL has KIOSK computers in dormitory lobbies, the Guest House,
Brookhaven Center and Berkner Hall/Cafeteria. All PCs connected to the BNL
network have internet access. If you have an email account, you may access your email
by entering your name and password
through Outlook Web Access (OWA). For
more information regarding creating an account contact the Information Technology
Division (ITD) at Ext. 5522. E-mail and Internet access are useful for work
and can also be used to a limited extent for personal business.
ESOL is a laboratory program in association with the Literacy
Volunteers of America of Suffolk County, that supports visitors,
spouses, partners, students and staff members who would like to improve
their English skills with a variety of cross-cultural educational
programs.
The program also offers free English language classes for those who work at BNL, their spouses and children (ages 14 and over). Classes are held on the second floor of the Recreation
Building. Classes are scheduled at various times during weekdays depending on one's English speaking ability.
The BNL Hospitality Committee welcomes new BNLers and their families. The
committee provides friendship, fellowship and information about life at the
Lab and its surroundings. The Committee members speak many different
languages, some of which include Dutch, German, Hindi, Italian, French,
Japanese, Mandarin, Taiwanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and English.

What is a Notary Public?
A Notary Public is a public servant appointed by state government to witness
the signing of important documents and administer oaths.
How does a Notary identify a signer?
Generally, the Notary will ask to see a current identification document or
card with a photograph, physical description and signature. A driver’s
license, military ID or passport will usually be acceptable.
Does notarization make a document "true" or "legal"?
No. A notarization typically means the signer acknowledged to the Notary
that he or she signed the document or vouched under oath or affirmation that
the contents of the document were true.

Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus are two common health issues on Long Island:
Lyme Disease - This disease is carried by deer ticks. An infected tick can transmit the spirochete to the humans and animals it bites. Be
alert for symptoms which may include a red rash (especially surrounding the tick bite), flu-like symptoms, or joint pains in the first month
following any deer tick bite. If diagnosed and treated early with antibiotics, Lyme disease is almost always readily cured. Insect
repellents with DEET in them can reduce the risk of tick bites. DEET is a chemical and should be used according to manufacturer’s directions.
West Nile Virus - This virus is a rare mosquito-borne infection that can cause fever and headaches and in some cases neurological
disorders. Mosquitoes are most active at dawn (just before sun rise) and at dusk (just before sunset). Limiting your time outside during those
periods will limit your chances of being bitten by a mosquito. Insect repellents with DEET in them can reduce the risk of mosquito bites. DEET
is a chemical and should be used according to manufacturer’s directions.

The on-site Brookhaven Lab Courtesy Van offers FREE on-call, door-to-door
service between the hours of 8:30am and 4:15pm, Monday through Friday,
excluding Lab holidays.
Requests are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Be prepared to
meet the van at the main entrance of your building. In order for us to be
able to serve as many customers as possible, please be ready to board the
van before making the call for pickup. Pick-ups can be arranged by calling
344-2714 and providing your name, telephone extension, location of pickup,
location of drop-off and number of passengers.
A Laboratory vehicle operates twice daily
Monday through Friday with the exception of holidays and when BNL is
officially closed to transport visitors and guests of BNL to and from the
Ronkonkoma Train Station and is a FREE service.

passengers going to BNL.

Stony Brook University offers a shuttle bus from the University to BNL for Students and Post-docs. You
are required to show your BNL ID
badge in order to board the bus.
Held during July and August, these Summer Sunday Tours are free and
features the Whiz Bang Science Show, the Camp Upton Historical Collection,
an exhibit on the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded for research
conducted at Brookhaven Lab, and tours of Brookhaven’s world-class
scientific facilities. No reservations needed.

Brookhaven’s Child Development
Center offers a day care program for children between the ages of six weeks
to five years. Our emphasis is on each individual child’s process of

year except for BNL holidays and the week between Christmas and New Year’s

The BERA Summer Recreation Program is available to on-site families, and on a limited basis, to employees
living off-site. Children from ages 5-14 years old may attend. The program offers arts and crafts,
sports activities, educational activities in a multi-cultural setting. Red Cross Certified swimming
instructors offer once a week swim lessons in five different categories, in
addition to daily gym and swim time. The Program schedule is for 8 weeks in July and August from
8:00am to 5:00pm. The instructors are NYS certified teachers. The cost is based upon attendance of one to eight
weeks.

The Environment, Safety and Health (ESH) Directorate supports BNL staff
and visitors with a vision and mission.
Vision: Our internal and external customers recognize us as
best-in-class providers of environment, safety, and health services.
Mission: To serve the environment, safety, and health needs of our
internal customers in an effective and efficient manner and to meet or exceed the expectations
of our external customers.
As part of your employment and/or assignment, you will receive specific job
safety training. All necessary safety equipment and training should be
subsequently made available to you through the department in which you work.
Rules on radiation safety, general safety, fire safety, traffic safety,
industrial hygiene and environmental protection must be carefully followed.
Disposal or release of any and all oil, or hazardous materials into trash
containers is strictly forbidden. Specific rules must be followed to manage
these materials.

Upon sounding of the BNL site sirens,
residents of the apartment area shall proceed indoors, close all windows and
doors, and await further instructions from the Fire Dept or the Local
Emergency Coordinator (LEC). The front entrance of the housing units
displays the building manager and emergency contacts.
Please familiarize yourself with the locations of fire extinguishers and how
to use them. In the event of an emergency dial 2222. Alarm
testing is done periodically in the apartments and dormitories.
In the event of an emergency such as medical, fire, hazardous chemical
spills, or serious injury, dial 2222 or 911 from a Laboratory telephone or pull the nearest fire alarm box.
Do not alter power cords or electrical outlets. Doing so
can produce dangerous results. If you need to convert a European
plug, this should be done via an approved plug adapter. These adapters are
an interface that attaches between the European plug and the American
socket. Power converters adjust the voltage. Adapters and converters
can be purchased at the BERA Store, the Housing Office, Radio Shack, K-Mart,
Home Depot and a variety of other stores. If you require assistance
obtaining an adapter or converter, please contact the Housing Office at Ext.
2541 or 2551.
The Safety Hotline, Ext. 8800, may be called at any time to report unsafe conditions or to ask a
question.
The Laboratory has established a site siren system to provide warnings of a Lab-wide emergency. The site sirens are
tested every Monday at 12:00pm (noon). The Lab signals and your actions are as follows (building public address announcements will assist you).
** Continuous sounding of site sirens for five minutes - Proceed immediately to
the Building Assembly Area. Await instructions which may include the nature
of the emergency, the type, sequence, and routes for evacuation.
** Intermittent sounding of site sirens for five minutes – Evacuate the site
immediately.

should not be altered or damaged in any way. Upon check-out, the
units should be left reasonably clean. Any excessive cleaning or

in any of the dormitories.

Televisions equipped with satellite connection in all apartments, Guest House rooms, Guest House lounge and dormitory lounges.
KIOSK computers with high speed internet connection are available in all dormitory lounges.
Ethernet connections and wireless are available in all dormitory rooms and Cisco Wireless Access Points (WAPs) are available in the dormitory
lounges and Guest House.
Each dormitory hall has an on-site telephone and a pay phone in the common area.
A public phone for each dormitory room. A calling card may be
used for all off-site telephone calls.
DSL and wireless connections in the apartments and cottages.
A DVD loaner program, based on availability.
Rollaway beds, high chairs and cribs are available upon request and availability.
Housekeeping in all dormitories and the Guest House.
Pets are allowed in all apartments, except connecting efficiencies. Occupants must complete an Approval to Harbor Pet Form,
which can be obtained from the
Housing Office.
If you would like to receive a Longwood Library card, please go to the
Research Library, Bldg 477 to pick up an application. You must show
your BNL ID badge.
Proof of Residency letter to use local beaches.
If you live on-site at BNL you will need a letter showing your Proof
of Residency in order to receive a car sticker and use any Town of
Brookhaven beaches or any County of Suffolk beaches. Please
contact the Housing Office for a copy.
This information applies to the use of Brookhaven’s computers and
network and all methods of access in the on-site housing areas. The
U.S. Department of Energy and Brookhaven Laboratory provide guests
in our housing areas with wired and wireless networking
infrastructure to support The Laboratory’s official business.
Official business includes all authorized work connected with the,
design, construction, and operation of The Laboratory, and its
authorized programs in research, development, education, and
associated administrative- and support- activities.
Responsibilities of Computer Users:
• Software Protection: All users shall be responsible for complying
with copyright, licensing, trademark protection, and fair-use
restrictions. • Virus-protection: All users must use virus protection software.
BNL can provide users with Trend Micro’s OfficeScan for those
without up-to-date anti-virus software subscriptions. • Banners: All users must follow the guidelines of the DOE’s Warning

Brookhaven allows guests reasonable use of computing resources (for

use is authorized for non-work-related activities if they satisfy

• Do not interfere with job performance, nor delay or compromise

Personal Use of Computer:
The following examples of the personal use of computers constitute
acceptable non-work-related activities that meet the criteria
specified above. Should you wish to use the computer for other
purposes that you believe are compatible with the criteria, before
doing so please check with the Cyber Security Office who would be
pleased to advise you.
• Ongoing education, self-training, and professional development. • Personal correspondence and work on your own resume or those of
family members. • Work for charities and non-political local community groups. • Good-taste Internet access. • Various researches, such as reading newspapers and magazine
articles, checking airline prices and schedules and purchasing
tickets, browsing sales catalogs, comparing prices of automobiles
and obtaining road maps, and checking accounts in credit unions and
retirement plans. • Work on personal finances (for example, preparing income taxes).
The following are some examples of inappropriate use of BNL
resources and are strictly prohibited, This list should not be
considered all-inclusive; please check with the Cyber Security
Office about your proposed usage:
• Supporting or accessing sites that promote hate language,
harassments, or threats. • Supporting or accessing sites that ridicule others on the basis of
race, creed, religion, sex, disability, nationality, or sexual
orientation. • Creating, downloading, viewing, storing, copying, or transmitting
sexually oriented material (e.g., pornography, child pornography) • Gambling. • Working for commercial purposes or supporting for-profit
organizations or other outside employment or businesses. • Endorsing any product or service. • Participating in any partisan political activity. • Misleading someone into believing you are acting in an official
capacity. • Hosting services (such as creating or storing web sites) for
purposes not related to Brookhaven’s work. • Using peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing services, such as Napster,
Gnutella, KaZaA. • Using any software that allows your computer to be shared outside
the Brookhaven firewall without first obtaining approval via the
Cyber Security Management Information System. • Creating and/or forwarding of chain letters and mass mailings. • Violating license and other computer-related contract provisions -
particularly those that expose The Laboratory to legal costs or
damages. • Using software, such as password-cracking tools, vulnerability
scanners, and network sniffers, without the express written consent
of the Chief Cyber Security Officer (CCSO).
BNL Cyber Security reserves the right to deny
network access to any system that has been
determined to be a liability to BNL.

While the immediate vicinity around BNL has no large hotels, these
establishments are within 45 minutes drive of the Lab. BNL is located
at exit 68 of the Long Island Expressway (LIE); hotel locations are given by
exit number. Exit numbers below 68 are west of BNL; exit numbers above 68

Alcohol consumption (SBMS) The consumption or unauthorized possession of alcoholic beverages is
prohibited in all areas of the site except for the Brookhaven Center
Club and the housing areas. The only exception to this rule is that
alcohol may be served at after-hours functions, with prior approval by
the Department Chair or Division Manager, the Assistant or Associate
Laboratory Director, and a Deputy Laboratory Director. No Employee,
Guest or Contractor may drink alcohol during the course of their work
day. Consumption of alcohol during BERA-sponsored sporting events is
prohibited; however, participants may request permission to serve
alcohol after games. Employees who consume alcohol at after-hours events
should not return to the work area following the function, nor should
they drive if in an impaired condition.
Requests for exceptions should be documented and submitted for approval
using the Request Form for Permission to Serve Alcohol. Upon approving,
the Deputy Laboratory Director will forward the approved form to the
Recreation Supervisor. The Recreation Supervisor will notify the
requestor of the approval and send copies to the Department Chair /
Division Manager and the Assistant / Associate Laboratory Director. On the form, the requestor specifies the place, date, time and reason
for the event, the anticipated number of employees who will attend, and
the name of the individual who will assume responsibility as the "host."
The host must be a level 2 manager or above, or their designee. The host
also signs the Request Form and commits to make every effort to ensure
that the quantity of alcohol served is restricted and to prevent
individuals from driving, if impaired, or returning to work.
Celebrations held off-site during lunch or other working hours should be
strongly discouraged for reasons both of safety and loss of
productivity. Employees who consume alcohol during any off-site luncheon
or event shall not return to work the same day. If circumstances make it
necessary to schedule off-site events at which alcohol will be served,
the event host shall send a memorandum to the Deputy Director for
Operations explaining how these concerns have been addressed.
Illegal Drugs and Controlled Substances
Individuals are strictly prohibited from using, possessing, selling, purchasing, distributing, or being under the influence of illegal drugs on
the Laboratory site or while performing Laboratory business.
Individuals are prohibited from abusing controlled substances, and should consult their
physicians for information regarding a prescription drug's potential to impair job performance.
Bicycles
When riding a bicycle on-site at BNL you must wear a helmet as REQUIRED Laboratory policy.
Ride in the same direction as the flow of traffic and single
file.
Walk your bike when using a crosswalk.
Do not wear headphones on both ears while riding.
Refrain from riding on sidewalks.
Computer Security
The U.S. Department of Energy and Brookhaven National Laboratory
provide staff with computers, computing systems, and their
associated communication systems to support the Laboratory's
official business. Official business includes all authorized work
connected with the design, construction, and operation of the
Laboratory, and its authorized programs in research, development,
education, and associated administrative and support activities.
Inappropriate use of computers, software and equipment may
constitute fraud, waste, and abuse of government property.
Failure to comply with Brookhaven's computer policies may result
in disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal.

Firearms
No person, except members of law-enforcement agencies, may bring or carry firearms on-site without special authorization.
Property
All materials and services at the Laboratory, unless properly identified with another organization, are the property of the United States Government.
Government tagged property is clearly identified.
The theft, misuse, or personal use of Government property is unlawful and is grounds for immediate discharge.
No property or material, except for personally owned goods, may be removed from the Laboratory site without an authorized Property Pass or Loan Agreement.
Property passes can be obtained from the Property Management representative of your division.
The BNL Safeguards and Security Division reserves the right to inspect and search vehicles entering or leaving the site.
Any stolen items must be reported to the BNL Safeguards and
Security Division at ext. 2238.
Sexual Harassment
Brookhaven is committed to keeping its work environment free of threatening, intimidating, or harassing conduct, including sexual harassment.
If you believe you have experienced a possible sexual harassment situation, make it clear to the other party that their behavior is unwelcome, and contact your
supervisor if you wish to take the matter further.
Professional conduct and ethical behavior are expected and required at all times.
Each individual is responsible for being aware of the appropriateness of his or her conduct and for respecting the rights of others.
Training and Qualification
Upon your employment/assignment, Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) ensures that BNL employees, guests, users, and contractors are trained and
qualified to perform their assigned tasks and job functions. The Laboratory has established training requirements in accordance with regulatory
requirements for work to be performed, hazards that may be encountered, areas that will be accessed, potential for risk, and general site
requirements. BNL has defined minimum training requirements for work to be performed, and monitors the completion of these requirements. In addition to
ensuring that personnel receive appropriate training, the Laboratory is committed to ensuring that its workers are qualified to perform their jobs.
Qualification (competency) is defined in terms of education, experience, training, and any special requirements (e.g., medical exams, external
certification) necessary for unescorted, unsupervised performance of assigned responsibilities. For qualification issues concerning varying
degrees of literacy and fluency in English, training and qualification requirements may be tailored (verbal exams, use of escorts/interpreters) to
address specific issues and qualifications based on the issue, program need, and requirements.
In addition, job-specific training requirements may be needed to ensure that workers are qualified to perform their tasks unsupervised in a safe and
reliable manner. The need for additional training and/or mentoring should be based on the tasks to be performed and the potential impacts that may result
from improper task performance. Job-specific training includes training on procedures, on-the-job performance evaluations, equipment training, and
indoctrination.
Your supervisor, in consultation with the Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) Coordinator and the Training Coordinator, will determine your training
and qualification needs. The Training Coordinator will also assist you in maintaining qualifications.
Upon termination, Guests must surrender their ID cards to the
Human Resources Division or to the GUV Center.

Employees are issued photo identification cards and vehicle identification stickers, each of which
must be displayed at all times
and/or presented upon request by authorized personnel and/or upon entering the Laboratory.
You will be given a temporary identification card on your first day at Brookhaven.
If you
stay on-site you will need to use your temporary ID card as a means of identification to gain admittance to the site. (Visitors are not issued
automobile stickers.)
Temporary picture passes for site visitors can now be issued for time periods up to 10 days.
U.S. citizens must bring a government issued ID card with
them that contains a photo such as a passport, a government issued ID
card, or a valid driver's license. Please note, some states are now
issuing licenses without photographs or licenses marked "cannot be used
for identification purposes," which cannot be used. Non-driver photo
identification cards, issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, can be
used as proof of identification.
Foreign nationals must bring their original passport (with
I-94 attached) and applicable visa with any INS documentation supporting
the visa status and/or renewals, (e.g., form I-20 for F-1 students or
form IAP-66/DS2019 for J-1 visa holders) to Brookhaven upon their
initial check-in and each time their visa status changes thereafter.
Individuals with employment authorization cards must bring their card
with them upon their initial check-in at BNL.
Lawful permanent resident of the United States (previously
called permanent resident aliens) must bring their Green Card or
passport with a valid I-551 stamp AND, in addition, a Government-issued
identification document which includes a photograph, such as a passport
or driver’s license with them upon their initial check-in at BNL.
Visa Waiver Program Participants: Effective October 26, 2004,
travelers applying for admission under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)
must be in possession of a machine-readable passport (MRP). As an
alternative, travelers may obtain a non-immigrant visa in their current
(non-machine-readable) passport.
Visa advisory: Foreign nationals intending to visit BNL under
the visa waiver program or in a business classification should be sure
that the INS Officer at the port of entry marks their arrival/departure
record (form I-94) with either W/B or B-1 visa for business status.
Foreign nationals with the following visa classifications are NOT
eligible to hold a BNL appointment: W/T, B2, J-2, and H-4. (Accompanying
family members may hold W/T, B2, J2, or H4 visas).
Canadian citizens: Citizens of Canada are normally exempt
from the usual requirements to enter the United States. However,
Brookhaven requires some proof of identification in order to issue an
appointment and a BNL ID card. One of the following items is appropriate
for identification purposes: passport, visa, green card, working papers,
or an E or TN visa. If none of these are applicable, you should bring a
birth certificate or certificate of Canadian naturalization.
Further Instructions: Instructions on identification
requirements for subsequent visits to BNL will be provided upon
check-in. This documentation is required for guest registration, the
issuance of appointments and any subsequent appointment renewals. A
Brookhaven photo ID card cannot be issued without the appropriate
identification.
Foreign nationals need to possess a Social Security card in order to work in
the United States. If a Social Security card is needed, individuals may
apply at the nearest Social Security Office which is located at 75 Oak
Street, Patchogue. Identification such as a passport, visa, employee ID card
or other forms of identification will be required at time of application.

State, you will need to obtain a NYS driver license. At time of application

You must have a valid New York State Driver’s License to operate a
vehicle.
To learn to drive, you must first obtain a Learner’s Permit and complete a mandatory 5-hour class. DMV recommends 30 hours of practice driving with a
licensed driver in the vehicle with you, prior to taking the Road Test.
New York State Driver’s Manuals are available at many of the BNL check-in locations, including Housing and
the Guest
& AGS Users Center, both located in Building 400A.

New York State will recognize your foreign driver license if you remain a
resident of the nation that issued the license. If you plan on maintaining
your foreign drivers license, it is recommended that you get an
International Driving Permit. The International Driving Permit verifies, in
several languages, that you hold a valid driver license in your home
country. A police officer who cannot read the language on your foreign
driver license can read the permit. To apply for the International Driving
Permit, you should contact the authorities in your home country. If you are
planning on becoming a resident of New York State, you will need to obtain a
NYS driver license. At time of application you must show your Social
Security Card. For information on how to obtain a Social Security Card, log
on to the Social Security website at www.ssa.gov or call 1-800-772-1213. For
more information regarding obtaining a valid New York State driver license,

All individuals driving on-site are required to have a valid drivers license. Vehicles are also required to have a valid state
registration, and a valid vehicle inspection.
Individuals are responsible for complying with all established traffic rules and regulations. Driving on the BNL site is a privilege,
not a right.
Use of seat belts is required when operating a vehicle on-site.
Personal vehicles must be registered with the Safeguards and Security Division (SSD). You will receive a vehicle sticker that must be
attached to the back of the rear view mirror of your vehicle.
All individuals driving on-site are responsible for complying with the general traffic rules and regulations, prescribed in the
Vehicle and Traffic Law of the State of New York, with the following exceptions:
Parking is permitted on-site only on paved or stone covered areas and only where it does not interfere with the flow of
traffic or with the movement of emergency vehicles. Parking is specifically prohibited in designated no parking zones, which are
identified by yellow markings or signs or on the wrong side of the street, in fire lanes or in front of hydrants, or on the grass, except
near the softball fields during athletic events or at Building 30 on special occasions.

The SSD must be notified immediately after any accident involving a vehicle or bicycle on-site or a government vehicle
off-site.
Right-of-Way must be followed at all times. Fire trucks, police vehicles, ambulances and utility emergency vehicles have the
Right-of-Way on-site. All other vehicles shall move to the side of the road and stop when such emergency vehicles approach. Emergency vehicles
shall display flashing red lights and use sirens.
Pedestrians and wildlife must be given every consideration when they are crossing the road on-site or off-site. The Lab does have a
large population of deer, wild turkey, fox and geese.
The SSD monitors the speed of traffic on-site and may issue warnings and tickets to those
who exceed the posted speed limits. Driving safely is everyone's responsibility, whether it is on the BNL
site, or anywhere else. It is imperative for all employees, visitors, users, and guests to understand the traffic requirements and
follow the established traffic safety rules.

to provide driving lessons for those who have little or no driving

Long Island (LI) has many beautiful beaches. The Atlantic Ocean is to the south and east,
and the Long Island Sound separates LI from Connecticut on the north.
The Peconic Bay is situated between the LI twin forks. To the south, separated by
the Great South Bay, there is a barrier beach that stretches thirty-two miles from the Moriches Inlet
to Democrat Point protecting Long Island's South Shore. This barrier beach has been declared
the Fire Island National Seashore.
Fire Island includes summer communities, beautiful beaches, the Fire Island Lighthouse, restaurant/bars,
hiking trails, and a sunken forest. Robert Moses State Park, the Fire Island Lighthouse, Sailors
Haven, Watch Hill, the Otis Pike Wilderness area and Smith Point are some of the more popular natural
outdoor attractions. Part of it is located to the east of Smith Point Park (289-4810); Watch Hill
can be reached by either the Davis Park or Watch Hill ferry (475-1665). It also includes
the William Floyd Estate in Mastic Beach, near Shirley (399-2030).
Access to Fire Island is by ferry, private vessel, and by vehicles over bridges
that connect the island to the mainland.
Davis Park is the closest beach community to BNL. It is a Brookhaven Town park, located on Fire Island, and can be

Brookhaven Town Beaches - These include beaches at Shirley and Shoreham. For permit information, call

Smith Point County Park - This ocean beach is located across a toll-free
bridge, at the southern end of William Floyd Parkway, on Fire Island,
approximately 10 miles south of BNL. There are grills, daytime
lifeguards, a playground, bathrooms, showers, and a snack bar. A Green
Key permit is required for all Suffolk County residents. There

Wildwood State Park - Wildwood is the closest park to BNL, located on Long Island Sound, in Wading River.
The park includes a beach, recreation area, picnic area and camping grounds. There is a parking fee

South Haven Park - Is south of BNL and includes hiking trails, fishing, horses for hire on its trails,
picnic area, camping grounds, rowboats, and the county's trap and skeet fields.

Located on 7th Avenue between 31st & 33rd Street, New York City. Dubbed the world's most
famous arena, accommodating virtually all forms of entertainment and sports, from
state-of-the-art rock concerts, touring family shows, professional wrestling, boxing,
track & field, lacrosse and soccer. Home of the National
Basketball Association (NBA) Knicks team and the

sports, from state-of-the-art rock concerts, touring family shows,
professional wrestling, boxing, track & field, lacrosse and soccer.
It is also home to the NHL New York Islanders team, and the arenas football team,
the NY Dragons.
Shea Stadium was built for the New York Mets. Named after William Shea, an attorney who worked
to bring National League baseball back to New York City after the Giants and Dodgers fled
for the West Coast. Shea also served as home to the NY Yankees when Yankee Stadium was
rebuilt in 1974-1975, and as the home of the NFL's NY Jets and the NY Giants. As a matter
of fact, Shea Stadium was home to all four AL, NL, and NFL teams in 1975 -- the first and only
time that four professional franchises inhabited the same stadium at the same time. The
most distinctive features of Shea Stadium is the right-center scoreboard (still one of the largest
in the majors) and a Big Apple that rises from a black top hat when a NY Met player hits a homerun.
Yankee Stadium has served as home for the legendary NY Yankees team, as well as most of the
brightest stars in baseball, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Ron
Guidry, and Reggie Jackson. Indeed, it's known around the world as "The House That Ruth
Built," thanks to the large crowds that headed up to the Bronx after Yankee Stadium opened
on April 18, 1923, with Babe Ruth as the marquee player.
Today there are more than 50 vineyards on LI ranging from 2 to 600 acres and 30 wineries
producing 500,000 cases or 1,200,000 gallons of wine that is winning awards nationally and
internationally and being served in some of the best restaurants in NYC and beyond.

BNL's Association
of Students And Postdocs (ASAP) is an organization of
students and postdocs working at Brookhaven. Our aim is to improve the
quality of life of our members, and to act as a magnet to bring together
students and postdocs in a social setting. The ASAP Lounge is located in
Building 462, on the corner of Bell Avenue and Center Street.
Some activities they
offer are: Thursday night movie, Monthly Book Club, Frisbee group, student

Brookhaven Employee Recreation Association (BERA) was established to
promote and regulate Laboratory-wide recreational and social activities at
BNL which is administered by the Quality of Life/BERA/Recreation Office, located in Building 400A.
BERA oversees the many clubs and organizations, and assists in the administration of
the overall program and the use of available recreational facilities on-site. These activities/clubs
include aerobics, ballroom dance, basketball, bowling, canoeing, running, swimming, toastmasters,

BERA members are employees and retirees of BNL, BSA, or the Brookhaven
Area Office of the U.S. Department of Energy, and members of their immediate
families; persons with BNL or BSA guest, user, and visiting appointments,
and members of their immediate families; employees of permanent on-site
employers (such as the cafeteria, credit union, Upton Post Office, etc.),
and members of their immediate families. You are a BERA member when you
receive your photo ID badge and life number. Tours of all facilities

The BNL gym is open Monday - Friday from 7:00am - 9:00am and 11:00am
- 9:00pm and Saturday from 10:00am - 4:00pm for BERA sponsored
activities, and employees' and users general activities. The gym is
available for activities such as volleyball, and basketball. Some areas
are reserved for use by organized BERA league teams. For more

Located in the back of the gymnasium. The hours are Monday - Friday
7:00am - 9:00am and 11:00am - 9:00pm and Saturday from 10:00am - 2:00pm.
The Weight Room is for members only. The individual annual fee for the BERA weight room membership is $25 for the calendar year. Daily guest
passes are $3.00 and available at the BERA Store. BERA Store hours are
M-F from 9:00am-3:00pm. When you receive your BNL ID badge, you and your
immediate family (spouse and adult children 18 and older) are eligible
to become BERA members. On the 2nd Monday and 4th Wednesday of the
month, between 5-7pm, there will be a fitness trainer available at the weight room
to discuss gym equipment safety orientation.
The pool is available to BNL employees and their families. There are
open swim, lap swim and other programs offered Monday thru Saturday.
You may purchase an individual or family pool pass at the pool. Friday evening is
Family Swim from 5:00pm-8:00pm for $5.00 per family.
Swimming lessons are available for children and are scheduled during the summer. Adult swim lessons
are generally scheduled for January and February. For more information

The Recreation Hall is located in the apartment area and is available for use as a lounge or meeting
place for employees, residents and visitors to BNL. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings
an attendant is present between 5:30pm-9:30pm. Other activities available at the Rec Hall are;
ping-pong, chess, lending library, piano and large screen TV. Reservations for employee group parties
can be made by calling the Recreation Office at ext. 2873.
The Park is located at the east end of Brookhaven Avenue. It
features athletic fields (softball, football, soccer and cricket) an
archery range, volleyball courts, and picnic areas. There is a
covered gazebo and barbeque grills for use. Playground equipment
is located at the fields for children. If you wish to reserve the Gazebo or an area
in the Park, or make a camping reservation, please contact the Recreation Office at ext. 2873.
There are outdoor tennis courts on Bell Avenue available for your use.
Reservations are needed for prime time:11:30am to
2:00pm and 4:30 to 7:00pm. Reservations may be made
by Lab employees only, including those with visiting and guest

Located north of West Fourth Avenue behind the Fire House, the Parcourse is spread throughout a beautiful
setting of pine woods and consists of a series of 18 exercise stations set up in a 1.57 mile serpentine trail.

Shelter Island is accessible only by ferry shuttles from either Greenport or North Haven. For more information on ferry schedules:

Long Island Expressway (LIE) or Route 495.
This is Long Island’s major highway, and runs east and west from New
York City to Riverhead. At Riverhead, travelers must take county roads
to get to the north or south forks of the Island. The exit numbers
increase going east, and BNL is located north of Exit 68 on William
Floyd Parkway.
William Floyd Parkway or County Road 46.
This road runs north and south across the Island. To go north, turn
right onto William Floyd Parkway as you exit the Lab; turn left to go
south. To get onto the LIE, turn left onto William Floyd Parkway as you
exit the Lab, and follow the signs for Route 495.
Secondary Roadways North of the Lab.
There are four main east-west routes that parallel the LIE. Immediately
north of the Lab is Route 25, also known as the Jericho Turnpike or
Middle Country Road, which runs all the way out on the North Fork to
Orient Point and all the way west to New York City. North of Route 25,
at the end of William Floyd Parkway, is Route 25A, which runs along the
North Shore from Smithtown to Riverhead.
Secondary Roadways South of the Lab. Route 27, also known as Sunrise Highway, runs along the South Shore.
Most of the time its a four-lane divided
highway. South of the Sunrise Highway is Montauk Highway, also known as
Route 27A, which runs to the tip of the South Fork to Montauk Point.
The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) serves all of LI with service to New York City's Penn Station. Connections are available from there to Amtrak
and regional lines. The closest LIRR Station to BNL is in
Mastic/Shirley; however, trains arrive and depart more frequently at the
Patchogue and Ronkonkoma stations.
