The integration of genetics into public health is already happening and the Association of Chronic Disease Directors (CDD) is among the first to start weaving genetic threads into the fabric of public health policies and programs aimed at reducing the population burden of chronic diseases. The Association's Genetics Planning Group, in collaboration with CDC's National Centers for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) and Environmental Health (NCEH), will convene the Genomics and Chronic Disease Summit at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel, Atlanta, Georgia on January 31 - February 1, 2002. Invited representatives of the CDD, NCCDPHP, NCEH, Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, Association of Public Health Laboratories, Coalition of State Genetics Coordinators, and the newly established Centers for Genomics and Public Health will meet in disease specific work groups to develop short-term (3-5 year) recommendations for integrating genomics into asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity program operations at the state level.
