NIDDK Travel Awards for Clinical Trainees Attending the National Medical Association Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly
TRAVEL AWARDS PROGRAM
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Medical Association (NMA) are pleased to announce travel awards providing support to residents and fellows in various departments of Schools of Medicine to participate in the Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly of the NMA.
Program Purpose
The intent of this award is to enhance the potential research careers of residents and fellows and to encourage research in disease areas that disproportionately impact the health of under served communities. The NIH anticipates that through this scientific opportunity, a greater number of physicians from communities underrepresented in science will enter into and remain in research positions. By participating in the scientific symposium, the residents or fellows will have the opportunity to interact with preeminent scientists in basic, behavioral and clinical research. Further, the clinical trainees will be exposed to research opportunities through the NIH-sponsored workshop at the NMA Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly.
Funding
Each selected trainee will be awarded expenses to cover transportation, hotel and meals for FOUR DAYS.
Selection Process
A special evaluation group will determine awards based on policies and provisions of the NIH governing administrative awards. This opportunity is being extended to residents and fellows interested in clinical research. Selections will be based on the individual’s general research ambition, letters of reference, and record of excellence in science.
Eligibility
To be eligible, the trainee must meet the following criteria:
- Be a member of a nationally underrepresented group in biomedical or behavioral research;
- Be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or legal permanent resident
- Be an underrepresented resident or fellow from a School of Medicine or Training Program;
- Submit a letter of intent describing his/her research interests and career ambitions;
- Include a curriculum vita;
- Submit a letter of support from the Chairperson or Director of the Training Program of his/her department.
