Background

Community Overview

This is a scenic region, bordered to the South by the Missouri River in Montana. Both the reservation and neighboring Roosevelt County make up one of the poorest areas in the state. The reservation far exceeds the eligibility standards for Empowerment Zone designation. In addition, there is a significant crime problem. In 1997, there were 100 total crimes. In 1998, the numbers were no better. Through May, there were already 46 crimes.

Strategic Plan Highlights

With the implementation of the strategic plan, the community strives to balance economic and community development.

Partnerships

Partnerships include tribal governments, local governments and public and private agencies.

Community Involvement

Outreach to the residents in the designated areas consisted of press releases, articles in local newspapers and a series of public meetings.
