IMMEDIATE OPPORTUNITY: Earth Portal Internship, 2009

The National Council for Science and the Environment is seeking motivated, hard-working, and inquiring students or recent graduates for 3 unpaid, immediate internships in Washington, DC to work on the Earth Portal. Interns will assist the Program Coordinator by

  • posting daily news stories
  • loading and copyediting Encyclopedia of Earth articles
  • helping compile topical resources for the weekly featured publication
  • circulating communications among Earth Portal staff and volunteers
  • helping with the weekly e-newsletter

Candidates must

  • Be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Have good communication and editing skills
  • Be organized, highly motivated, and take initiative
  • Have a desire to learn
  • Interest in a broad range of current environmental issues

Desired experience and skills

  • Prior work on MediaWiki and/or WordPress
  • Familiarity with the Encyclopedia of Earth
  • Copyediting experience

Interns will become fluent in MediaWiki, Wordpress, and other programs involved with managing web resources. Interns will also gain valuable copyediting experience and learn daily from the broad environmental resources of the Earth Portal, as well as be able to network with those involved and be associated with a growing comprehensive online hub for environmental information.

Internships

The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) offers internships for students and recent graduates throughout the year. Preference is given to students or graduates of the NCSE's  University Affiliate  institutions.  “Semester in Washington” students are encouraged to apply but they will not receive a stipend but will earn credit.  Please find application instructions at the bottom of the page. All interns will gain a diverse experience during their tenure at NCSE, engaging in a variety of programs, projects and general office tasks.  Interns may assist in outreach to the academic, governmental, business, and civil communities.  Opportunities made available to interns include attending briefings, seminars and conferences -- all important networking opportunities in DC and on Capitol Hill.

Responsibilities may include working on any number of our programs:
Education and CareersScience SolutionsAnnual ConferenceEarth Portal Science Policy .  Additionally, interns will work with general management of the NCSE to maintain website design, electronic outreach, databases management, LAN support, web research, and content evaluation.  Strong candidates will be particularly interested in working on fundraising and development issues. 

Duration:
Internships usually last for 3 months with an opportunity for extension and promotion.
40 hours per week; Monday – Friday.
