In a tragic Blackhawk helicopter crash on Saturday, January 20, in Iraq, Lt. Col. David C. Canegata III, 50, of St. Croix and Sgt. First Class Floyd Everett Lake, 43, of St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands were killed with ten others.  Canegata and Lake bring the number of United States Virgin Islanders sacrificing for the War on Terror to seven.  Outside of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Insular Areas, including the Freely Associated States, have lost thirty in the War on Terror.  The Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs remembers and honors those and their surviving families who give the ultimate in sacrifice in the War on Terror.
