Medical Services and Medical Emergencies

OMC resources are limited and must concentrate on those activities required by the DOE Order and other binding regulations. OMC does offer many services for the convenience of employees, including clinical laboratory testing for personal physicians. It also is a cost-saving for the Lab for employees to use these lab services since it reduces our claims-paid expenditures with our health insurers.

The OMC nurses provide minor first aid and will dispense non-prescription medications. Medical consultations are available upon request from the OMC clinical staff; however, all employees are required to consult their personal physicians for acute and chronic medical conditions, as well as the monitoring of prescription medications used on a regular basis. While we are aware that many employees do not have Primary Care Physicians and in the past may have relied exclusively on the expertise of OMC physicians, we strongly encourage employees to obtain a Primary Care Physician (PCP) through their regular medical insurance. For a more complete discussion of this issue, please see the article: Why Should I Get a Primary Care Physician.

In the case of medical emergencies that occur when the OMC is open, OMC will coordinate with BNL Fire Rescue to transport persons with chest pain, internal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, trauma and like conditions to local emergency facilities in the community who are more fully equipped to deal with such emergencies and have the proper accreditations to do so. When the OMC is closed, BNL Fire Rescue will respond to medical emergencies. Request help at X2222 or 911.

How can I obtain OMC services for non-employees?

The OMC is a specialty clinic, staffed and budgeted to fulfill the Laboratory's obligations under DOE orders and provide examinations, medical surveillance, fitness for duty and other occupational medical services to eligible employees. Generally speaking, employers or host institutions are responsible for the work-related health care of their employees, students and faculty. Provision of occupational health services such as medical surveillance may be included in contracts for work at the Laboratory. However, there are instances where it is difficult or impossible for non-employees to obtain occupational health services. There are also situations where unique conditions at the Laboratory or special circumstances make exceptions advisable. Services for non-employees may be requested by contacting the OMC Manager on extension 3665, or falco@bnl.gov. Requests are granted on a case-by-case basis and depend on the number of persons requiring services and the nature of the work, hazard or exposure.

No persons on site are excluded from evaluation at OMC based upon employment status. Non-employees are referred for off-site care wherever possible. Please contact the OMC Manager if you or your work group has special needs.

What should I do if a coworker appears ill or unfit for duty?

If an employee appears ill or unfit for duty, the supervisor should escort the employee to the OMC for medical assistance.

In emergencies, medical assistance should be summoned directly by calling extension 2222. The OMC is not a critical care or emergency facility. Persons in the need of such care will be transported to a local hospital emergency room directly. This includes persons on site with chest pain, bleeding, loss of consciousness or other emergency medical conditions.
