Volcanology Links - Natural Disasters
These are links to sites of organizations generally concerned with all types of natural disasters, and may have some volcano information. Many of them contain link lists for other types of natural hazards and disasters.
- United Nations, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs: ReliefWeb
- Intended to strengthen the capacity of the humanitarian relief community through the timely dissemination of reliable information on prevention, preparedness, and disaster response. Their Map Centre is a unique resource.
- International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
- Lots of information about the Intenational Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Federation Appeals and Situation Reports are sometimes issued during volcanic crises.
- Natural Disaster Reference Database
- This bibliographic database is maintained by the Earth Sciences Directorate at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Subject matter relates to the use of satellite remote sensing for disaster mitigation. Sections on volcanic eruptions and lahars are included.
- Risk Frontiers
- Their goal is to create strategic risk management and training solutions for insurance companies and their clients through world leading research into natural perils and their consequences.
- Natural Hazards Center
- A national and international clearinghouse for information on natural hazards and human adjustments to hazards and disasters. The Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado carries out its mission in four principal areas: information dissemination, an annual workshop, research, and library services. The center's prime goal is to increase communication among hazard/disaster researchers and those individuals, agencies, and organizations that are actively working to reduce disaster damage and suffering. The Natural Hazards Center has a variety of resources available from the Internet, including the Disaster Research Newsletter.
- Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)
- An international public health organization for the Americas that serves as the Regional Office of the World Health Organization. Some volcano-related information is provided.
- U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
- Only concerned with U.S. disaster situations, but they do have some Fact Sheets with good general information. There are also ideas about what to do before, during, and after an eruption. The FEMA for Kids - Volcano section has some useful information.
- U.S. Geological Survey: Earthquake Hazards Program
- Vast amounts of data and information about earthquakes both in the US and worldwide.
