STATEMENT OF ATTORNEY GENERAL JOHN ASHCROFT
REGARDING INDUCTION OF FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE
PAST PRESIDENT STEVE YOUNG INTO LABOR HALL OF FAME

“Steve Young served the Fraternal Order of Police faithfully throughout his twenty-six years as a member, including a term as its President. He committed his life to protecting his community and supporting law enforcement officers across our nation. Steve also provided the Justice Department with invaluable advice throughout the years. The Department will always appreciate the sacrifices he made to ensure that our communities are safer and more secure.”

Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao honored Fraternal Order of Police Past National President Steve Young with a posthumous award at the 56th Biennial National Conference. Secretary Chao announced that Young, who passed away in January, would be inducted into the U.S. Department of Labor’s Hall of Fame this September. In addition, the RISE (Resources and Investments in Spousal Employment) scholarship will be renamed in his memory.

In 2001, Young became the first labor leader to work with the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division to establish a collaborative process to resolve investigations of police departments. His efforts in the city of Cincinnati helped produce a comprehensive settlement agreement between the local union, city leaders and the Justice Department.
