TO JUSTICE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES FROM AROUND THE U.S.



James Byrd, Jr. Prosecution Team Among Top Award Recipients



WASHINGTON, D.C. - Attorney General Janet Reno will present awards to 173 Justice Department employees and 25 others at this year's Annual Attorney General Awards Ceremony on Friday.

The Attorney General will present the Justice Department's top award, the Attorney General's Award for Exceptional Service, to a team of investigators and attorneys who prosecuted the white supremacists responsible for the racially motivated death of James Byrd, Jr., as well as another team that secured the largest global settlement ever in a health care fraud case. Assistant Attorney General for Administration, Stephen R. Colgate, will receive the award as well.

Awards also will be presented to Justice Department agents, investigators, prosecutors, marshals, administrators and other law enforcement officials from across the country--from the District of Columbia to the Central District of California--at the 48th Annual Ceremony to be held at Constitution Hall, at 2:00 p.m. (Additional information on awards and recipients can be accessed at www.usdoj.gov/.

The event is open to federally-credentialed reporters.
