Facility | STEM is a custom-built electron microscope optimized for imaging unstained biological molecules with minimal radiation damage. The group at Brookhaven operates STEM as a User Facility with partial DOE and partial Fee-for-Service support. |
Applications |
STEM is a quantitative microscopy, and at BNL it is optimized for structure determination
of biological molecules, complexes, and organelles. Freeze-dried, unstained, unshadowed samples
are imaged in-focus which permits:
1. Mass measurements to: 2. Optimal visualization of metal clusters used as specific heavy atom labels. 3. Simultaneous imaging of DNA, protein, and gold labels in a complex. |
Video |
The role of the STEM and cryo-EM in structural biology is summarized by Joe Wall in this 3:30 minute STEM Video clip viewable with Real Player. |
