Visit to NAL by Dr. Joseph J. Jen, USDA Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics

Director Peter Young and Deputy Director Eleanor Frierson welcomed USDA Under Secretary Joseph J. Jen to the National Agricultural Library. Wayne Olson and Jerry Rafats described the operations of NAL's agricultural reference and service desk. Susan Fugate showed some of Thomas Jefferson's agricultural correspondence to Dr. Jen.
Kate Hayes briefed Dr. Jen on NAL's Technology Transfer Information Center. Lynne Sinder briefed Dr. Jen on NAL's Food and Nutrition Information Center and NAL resources on child obesity. Sally Sinn and Caroline Early told Dr. Jen about NAL acquisitions and serials.
Dr. Jen was briefed on NAL cataloging records. Sherry Davids told Dr. Jen about AGRICOLA. Document Delivery.
Tanya Tanner told Dr. Jen how NAL indexes publications. NAL added about 64,200 indexing records to AGRICOLA in FY 2002. Grace Sines and Mike Thompson briefed Dr. Jen on NAL information systems and technologies. Susan Fugate and Sara Lee told Dr. Jen about NAL Special collections and the new special collections viewing room.
Deborah Richardson told Dr. Jen that NAL collections carried information in many languages. Linda Mooney, Debbie Cicala, and Joyce Rice briefed Dr. Jen on NAL Administrative Office operations. After a whirlwind tour of NAL, Dr. Jen departed.
