Biography of Dr. Jim Reaves

Dr. Jim Reaves received his B.S. degree in biology from Voorhees College in Denmark, SC in
1977. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biology and plant pathology from Atlanta
University in Atlanta, GA in 1981 and 1985, respectively.
During his 26 years in the Forest Service, Dr. Reaves has served as a Research Plant
Pathologist and in a number of administrative positions. He has published his scientific work
in national and international science journals and Research Station outlets. Prior to
becoming Director for the Southern Research Station, Dr. Reaves was the Associate Deputy
Chief, Forest Service Research and Development in Washington D.C. In that previous position,
Dr. Reaves provided national leadership for Research and Development programs and enhanced
external partnerships.
Dr. Reaves has had additional leadership and executive training at the Federal Executive
Institute in Charlottesville, VA and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard
University in Boston, MA.
He has also been selected for a number of high profile assignments including leading a group
of scientists to China as the Ranking Forest Service Official and participating as a U.S.
delegate to the United Nations Forum on Forestry in Geneva, Switzerland and the Forest
Landscape Restoration Conference, Petropolis, Brazil.
He is a member of the Society of American Foresters, American Phytopathological Society,
Smithsonian, and the Kennedy Center.
