SOC Implementation

In 1994, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) established a Standard Occupational Classification Revision Policy Committee to develop a classification structure that would meet the needs of the 21st century. This effort resulted in the 2000 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system. OMB requires all Federal agencies that collect occupational data to adhere to the 2000 SOC. Information on the SOC is accessible on the Internet: http://www.bls.gov/soc/

The 2000-10 projections were the first to incorporate the 2000 SOC system. The occupation structure and data in all subsequent national employment matrices and editions of the Occupational Outlook Handbook, which is based on the corresponding national employment matrix years, also reflect the 2000 SOC system.
