What are some of the general issues that show up?

Age: age is a relative thing, and transplant centers generally don't have an absolute age above which they won't transplant a patient. For patients over 65, however, they look quite closely at their history, and for those over 70, they look very closely.

What about body weight? Again, there are no absolute criteria, but a high body weight, a higher body mass index, are negative factors. If a person refuses blood transfusions, which tend to be required during a liver transplant, that can make listing problematic.

What's not important: race and gender.
