Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope
STEM Picture Tour

Freeze
Drying
Unit
The freeze drying unit is used to dehydrate specimens for use in the electron microscope. As the specimens are prepared they are placed in a specimen loading cartridge until they are ready to be viewed.
STEM 1 STEM-1 is mounted and housed in a vibration isolation room. The electron gun is just beyond the top of the picture. Detectors protrude from the bottom of the column, and sticking out horizontally to the right is the specimen changer.
Specimen
Port
This view into the specimen loading port shows the the specimen cartridge (vertical bar) inside the port. Specimens are loaded into a cartridge and the cartridge is bolted to the top of the specimen changer.
Console The STEM-1 console is Martha's realm. Stage movement, field selction, and data taking are controlled from the console. The STEM-1 microscope is just visible through the window at left.
STEM 3 STEM-3 is in the center of this picture. Its specimen changer points horizontally to the right. At the top is a high voltage supply that powers the electron gun.
