Martin Luther King Jr. Day Extended Museum Hours Natural History Building, 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day the museum will extend its hours to 7:30 PM on Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17.

Darwin Anniversary Symposium Baird Auditorium, 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm February 12, 2009 marks the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin and the 150th year since the publication of his influential work, On the Origin of Species.

To recognize Darwin’s scientific accomplishments, including his observations on plant and animal life, the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health, in conjunction with the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, offers a day of discussions with distinguished panelists that will focus on a variety of topics from historical perspectives of Darwin to evolution and medicine.

Second Saturday -- Arts and Science: BUTTERFLY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Ground and Second floors, 1:00-4:00pm Feel the flutter! Join in celebrating the first anniversary of the exhibit Butterflies + Plants: Partners in Evolution with special arts and crafts activities for children of all ages.

Meet Museum educators and learn about metamorphosis, native butterfly species of our region and how to create your own butterfly garden.

Celebratory activities located both on ground and second floors. On the second floor, head for Butterflies+Plants: Partners in Evolution and the O. Orkin Insect Zoo.

ORCHID FAMILY FESTIVAL Ground floor and First floor; 10:00am-5:00pm To coincide with the exhibition Orchids through Darwin's Eyes, the Smithsonian's Horticulture Services Division and the U.S. Botanic Garden present a hint of spring in the dead of winter.

Talk with orchid specialists and watch potting demonstrations. For younger enthusiasts there will be orchids to pot to take home, lessons on pollination, temporary orchid tattoos and much more.

A Guide to Picking Wisely from the Sea: With Tastings, Discussions, and Luncheon Natural History Building Explore the connection between a healthy ocean and the seafood that we eat in this weekend celebrating ocean life. Learn about protecting and preserving our ocean and making informed choices about the fish we consume so that we can minimize our impact on the ocean environment. Enjoy delectable seafood dishes and meet some of this country’s top chefs, sustainable seafood experts, ocean scientists, and special guest Alton Brown. A healthy ocean depends on us, and our future health depends on its vitality. That’s what this weekend is all about.

Organized by the Smithsonian Associates in Cooperation with the Museum of Natural History and the Sant Ocean Hall.
