two of over 100 NRCS Earth Team volunteers who helped with the Community Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Make a Difference Day tree planting project in north Birmingham’s rebounding Norwood community

Thanks to the efforts of the NRCS Cawaco Resource Conservation & Development Council, the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Norwood Resource Center, over 100 NRCS Earth Team volunteers helped celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Make a Difference Day in Birmingham, Alabama, by planting over 100 trees in a little over five hours to replace those lost to age, pollution, and weather. The volunteers gathered in north Birmingham’s rebounding Norwood community and with funds from the McWane Cast Iron Pipe Company and the Urban and Community Tree Assistance, the Earth Team volunteers planted trees along Norwood Boulevard. The historic Norwood community with its appealing architecture is engaged in an on-going effort to restore its housing stock and tree-lined boulevards.

Some of the trees were purchased with a grant from the McWane Cast Iron Pipe Company while others were donated by the City of Birmingham’s Releaf Project and the Tropeano Family Farm.
