The PBS-sponsored Backyard Jungle
website, part of the PBS Kids web system highlights a different activity
each month to get kids and their families interested in exploring the outdoors
and the natural environment around them.
October’s featured activity is the
Backyard Conservation:
Habitat Hunt jointly developed by NRCS, Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) and
Backyard Jungle staff. It will help young people explore their backyards and
learn about natural systems.
On the website are three “challenge activities” that help young people focus on
the elements needed for wildlife habitat—food, water, shelter and space. On the
web page for parents and educators, the Backyard Conservation tip sheet on
Wildlife Habitat is offered to help guide the exploration. A newly created
partners’ page provides brief information and links for NRCS, WHC and the
National Association of Conservation Districts—the originators of the Backyard
Conservation campaign.
Backyard Jungle, aimed at ‘tweens (age 10-14+), logs 300,000 visitors per month
with about 30,000 registered members (registration is free). Members interact on
the website by posting drawings and photos, writing about their backyard
discoveries and voting for each other’s submissions.
