Tucson Southern Arizona Environmental Management
Society Earth Day Festival

To promote Southern Arizona's unique environment and rich cultural heritage, the
Tucson Earth Day Festival features activities, displays, music, dance and food.
The Tucson Plant Materials Center gave away more then 300 pots of native grass
seeds that were planted by children who attended last year's festival. The
festival draws participants from all across the community - more than 3,000
people in 2004. There were thirty-eight organizations hosting
environment-related exhibit booths with "hands-on activities" for Tucson's
youth, and approximately 350 children, adults, and families marched or entered
floats in the parade.
“What is Soil?” Coloring and Workbooks

NRCS Earth Team volunteers are distributing 4,000
What is Soil? booklets to NRCS district
conservationists and other staff throughout the State to promote soils education
on Earth Day. These booklets help Arkansas schools comply with a new state law
requiring schools to involve parents and guardians in the educational process.

will enjoy a giant "Earth" balloon and learn the Arkansas state soil via the
NRCS What is Soil? coloring and workbooks.
Coloring Contest

NRCS will be hosting a statewide coloring contest for grades K-5. Each of the
area coordinators will be visiting schools and dropping off the coloring pages.
Entries will be judged and a winner from each area will be selected to win a
prize and an overall statewide winner will be chosen.
Conservation Contest

NRCS will be hosting a contest for all elementary schools in the Denver Public
Schools district. This contest recognizes schools that have incorporated natural
resources and environmental issues into their curriculum. Applications are
accepted from these schools and then judged by a team of environmental
representatives from NRCS, Farm Services Agency, Forest Service, Colorado
Department of Agriculture, and the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation
District. The winning school will receive a plaque presented by the Governor and
will be designated as the 2005 Earth Day Elementary School of the Year. The
award will be presented on Earth Day, April 22, 2005

Delaware NRCS is participating in the annual Earth
Day Festival at Killens Pond State Park. This is an all day festival that
usually draws a rather large crowd.

Okaloosa Island, Ft. Walton Beach
Okaloosa County Tours Development Council will co-sponsor an event where
Earth Team volunteers will plant sea oats on dunes damaged by the four
hurricanes that hit Florida this past hurricane season. The dunes that had been
planted in previous years held up to the hurricanes very well and the idea is to
plant on dunes to prevent erosion in the face of future hurricanes in the
Florida panhandle.
Earth Day at Highlands Hammock State Park

Highlands Soil and Water Conservation District and the Sebring
field office will have a booth at Earth Day at Highlands Hammock State Park. We
will be handing out environmental brochures, novelties, and posters. We have
also made arrangements for "Rippley" the Waterdrop and "Freddie" the gator to
join in the festivities. Last year over 2,200 citizens of Highlands County
attended the event.
Importance of Plants

During April, Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District
Technician/Educator, Dan Perez, will present the "Importance of Plants" to all
schools in Lawrence County who request this program. Lawrence Soil and Water
Conservation District will provide Soil Stewardship Materials to students and
teachers. This year’s Soil Stewardship theme is “Celebrate Conservation.”
Cass County Earth Day Event for Third-Grade Students

Cass County celebrates a county-wide Earth Day event for 600 3rd grade students.
The celebration starts at 9:00 a.m. with the students watching a program put on
by the Earth Protectors in the Logansport High School Auxiliary Gym for the
first hour. During the second hour, 3rd grade students go to Berry Patch outdoor
lab to visit the "animals" " (high school students) who tell about their
habitat.
Spring River Clean-up

Friends of the Muscatatuck River Society, a committee of the Historic Hoosier
Hills RC&D, will conduct their spring river clean-up April 23. Event begins at 9
am at the Commons park in Vernon, Indiana. Volunteers will pick up trash from
the banks as well as from canoes. Educational events will be available as well.
Lunch provided afterwards at Vinegar Mill in Muscatatuck County Park.

The Allen County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Natural Resources
Conservation Service will host a field tour for 4th & 5th grade students from
Jefferson and McKinley Elementary Schools. Local professionals will educate
children on soils and soil formation, erosion and conservation, grasslands,
streambank erosion, non-point source pollution, and wildlife & fishery biology.
Approximately 200 students will attend the event. Partners also include Kansas
Department of Wildlife and Parks.
Boeing Earth Day

Boeing Earth Day, at Sedgwick County Zoo, will demonstrate the streambank
erosion with streambank trailer tailored for group third, fourth, and fifth
grade school-age children, reaches approximately 4,000 students.
EARTH (Earth Awareness Researchers for Tomorrow’s
Habitat)
April 26-27
Sedgwick and Butler counties
2-day event for 7th and 8th graders in Sedgwick and Butler counties, using the
streambank trailer, at Sedgwick Extension facility and 30 stations. Each
student is assigned 4 stations to visit. Subjects address soil, water, air, and
living resources. Approximately 1,500 students attend. Funding is provided by
319 grants from EPA Clean Water. Approximately 6 counties are now doing EARTH
events with more each year.
Conservation Field Days

NRCS along with the Scott County Soil and Water Conservation District will
sponsor several conservation education field days during April and May
in observance of Earth Day at the Kentucky-Japan Friendship Garden.
Approximately 600 first through fifth grades will visit water, soils, garden
tour, and an introduction to Japanese Culture, and kite making stations each
day. NRCS Earth Team Volunteers will assist with all stations.

The Harlan County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Cooperative State
Research, Education and Extension Service will sponsor an Adopt-A-Tree event at

The Pennyrile RC&D Council in cooperation with the Jeffers Bend Steering
Committee will host 70 seventh to ninth graders at Jeffers Bend Environmental
Center in Hopkinsville, Kentucky for hands-on environmental education
activities. NRCS, Kentucky Division of Water, Kentucky State University,
Little River Audubon Society, and Jeffers Bend Steering Committee will give
presentations on soil conservation, water quality, all about birds, how plants
grow, know your fish, and others.

Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District staff and NRCS will have a
conservation education display set up at the zoo. Communities from the area
participate in fun educational activities and observe over 1,300 animals.
General information is free. Exhibitors will be featured throughout the zoo
grounds providing visitors with an opportunity to celebrate the important
environmental and conservation activities taking place in our state. Typical
attendance for this event is approximately 5,000. Children will be able to
view microorganisms under a microscope to see how life comes about as well as
have a free day at the zoo.
2nd Annual Earth Day Event

The Glacial Ridge Project is hosting its second annual Earth Day event.
Approximately, 200 sixth grade students from Crookston and Red Lake Falls will
participate. There will be five learning stations with hands on activities. The
topics include prairie habitat, wetlands, survey and wetland restoration,
waterfowl identification, and a station about wood duck houses, bluebird houses,
and mallard hen houses
"Take Pride in the River"

Jackson, Mississippi
Earth Team volunteers will participate in the Upper Pearl River Watershed "Take
Pride in the River," campaign. The watershed coalition has been recently formed
to undertake clean up efforts in some 12 counties. Native Americans found
oysters containing pearls in the early 1600's-thus naming the river Pearl. It
drains into the Gulf of Mexico. Students will mark storm drains in
neighborhoods, Dump no waste, drains to Rez. The Ross Barnett Reservoir collects
water from the upper portion of the Pearl and provides recreation and the
capital city of Jackson, its drinking water. Recently, tests have shown high
levels of sediment --due to urban construction and pathogens due to failing
septic systems. Farmers and residents of urban areas are joining forces to help
implement an EPA grant to write a highly visible success story. These Jackson
Academy Earth Team volunteers will be receiving a highly coveted Youth
Conservation Award February 26, from the Mississippi Wildlife Federation for the
same efforts that took place on Earth Day, 2004.
Wappapello Lake Earth Day Event
April 26-7, 2005
The NRCS Poplar Bluff Field Office staff will be presenting an educational
program at the annual Earth Day event, hosted by the Army Corps of Engineers at
Wappapello Lake. The Poplar Bluff NRCS and Butler County Soil and Water
Conservation District will provide an interactive program for kids with
activities showing them how human actions have impacts (good and bad) on our
natural resources. Five minutes will be left at the end of each session so the
students can talk to the instructors. There will be several area schools
with approximately 300 students attending the event. Different “stations” will
be set up throughout the park and students will rotate through each one.
Presenters will have 25 minutes to interact with each group.

wildlife ecology. The highest scoring team represents the state in the
international Canon Envirothon held in the summer.

The Schuyler County Soil and Water Conservation District will be participating
in the Schuyler County 2005 Earth Day celebrations. This year's event will be
held at the NYS Fire Academy grounds on Saturday, April 23. The theme this year
is "Inspired by the Earth" and will feature local artisans and students
incorporating nature and the arts, as well as various other displays and
activities. Approximately 300 elementary school students will be attending as
well as adults and many high school students. Activities and displays put on by
the district will include a soils painting station where students will learn
about soils as they create art using paint made from soils, assist with displays
from each high school envirothon program (3 in the county) and host an
interactive display on watershed education highlighting the County's link to the
Chesapeake Bay.
North Carolina Envirothon

Cedar Rock Park, Alamance County, North Carolina
Fifty-four high school teams and about 35 middle school teams will compete in
North Carolina’s Envirothon. The competition is on Saturday, April 23.
3rd Grade Ag Day

Waverly, Ohio
NRCS and Earth Team volunteers will work with the Ohio Bluebird Society, the
Local Farm Bureau, and other local agencies for an informational day for 3rd
graders in Pike County. The students will learn about agriculture, the wise use
of natural resources, wildlife, and forestry. Approximately 20 students
win Bluebird boxes to take home and teachers are provided educational materials.
3rd Annual Central Ohio Soil Erosion and Sediment
Expo

The Expo will be held at Waterman Farm Agricultural Laboratory on the Ohio State
University campus. This daylong event will feature speakers and classes
discussing post-construction water quality design requirements as well as
construction site soil erosion and sediment best management practice. Throughout
the day exhibitors will be demonstrating their products. On-site demonstrations
of bioretention areas and wetland retention basins will also be featured. Over
200 developers, contractors, builders, and government agency personnel attend
this Expo annually.

Owyhee Fifth Grade Field Day

Owyhee Dam, Malheur Co., Oregon
This two-day event will provide students with information about the watershed
they live in and the natural resources they depend on. Stations will include:
irrigation, rangeland, ecology, livestock production, dam tours, rafting, water
quality monitoring, noxious weed management, wildfire management, etc. Natural
Resources Conservation Service will be hosting the rangeland ecology stations.

The Guam Environmental Protection Agency (Guam EPA) is proud to announce that
Earth Week 2005 will be celebrated April 16-23. This year, Guam EPA and
the Environmental Education Subcommittee of the Guam Watershed Planning

Na' La Bonita Island-wide Cleanup

The local soil and water conservation district will be donating 100 State pecan
tree posters to all schools in Hockley County. The Hockley County News-Press

NRCS will work with Boy Scouts to help them identify watersheds, range sites,
soils, and plant communities. The discussion will include land use and plants
found at Lake Whitney State Park.

The LBJ ranch will host approximately 20 to 25 booths dealing with how to manage
cattle, livestock breeds, cattle women’s program, etc. The Gillespie Soil and
Water Conservation District will display the rainfall simulator. NRCS and
the Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative will display native grasses for
identification and management.
Soil & Water Stewardship Week

A Soil & Water Stewardship Week Proclamation signed by a local
judge and the soil and water conservation district will be printed in the local
newspaper. Stewardship materials have been donated to some of the local churches
to increase awareness and participation in the community.

12th Annual St. Croix Earth Day
Eco-Fair

This annual eco-fair hosts over 1,000 4th – 6th grade students from local public
and private schools who participate in inter-active presentations, hikes, and
tours. Teachers are provided with environmental information and curricula
materials.
