NIDDK Emergency Preparedness

NIDDK Emergency Management/Crisis Response Team (EM/CRT) Program
NIDDK has an EM/CRT program that links to the NIH Emergency Management/Continuity of Operations Plan (EM/COOP) and includes Institute-specific Occupancy Evacuation Plan (OEP) guidance. The program includes extensive training provided by the NIDDK Office of Management and Policy Analysis (OMPA) to familiarize employees with their responsibilities during an emergency and/or crisis situation.  Much of the EM/CRT is communicated to Institute employees via monthly newsletters, entitled EM News.  To learn more about the NIDDK EM/CRT program, please contact the Institute's Emergency Coordinator (EC) or Deputy EC via their contact information listed below:

NIDDK EC:               Walter Mitton    301-435-2921(W) or mittonw@niddk.nih.gov

NIDDK Deputy EC:  Brad Felton     301-594-3056(W) or feltonb@niddk.nih.gov

NIH Emergency Management/Continuity of Operation (EM/COOP) Program
Purpose: to establish procedures for responding to an emergency event, keep employees safe, and ensure "essential" functions remain viable. A presentation about the NIH EM COOP Program is currently available at: http://ser.ors.od.nih.gov/documents/em_coop.ppt

NIH EM/COOP
includes the NIH COOP plan and Occupant Emergency Plan

NIH COOP Plan (COOP)
The NIH COOP plans for a broad range of emergencies and threats expected to prevent use of your primary facility for more than 12 hours.
When the NIH COOP plan is initiated, you will be contacted by your IC Emergency Coordinator (EC) and given specific instructions.

Occupant Emergency Plan (OEP)
OEP is designed to ensure personnel safety in the event of an incident inside or immediately surrounding your building causing a disruption expected to last less than 12 hours.
(Example: OEP would be implemented in the event of a minor fire that required evacuating the building or if an emergency occurred outside the building that required shelter-in-place).
This situation calls for one of two actions: Shelter-In-Place or Evacuation. For information on your buildings emergency plans, consult your Occupant Emergency Coordinator (OEC)(PDF) .

NIH Pandemic Flu Operational Continuity Plan
The NIH Pandemic Flu Operational Continuity Plan is designed to maintain critical operations, worker protection, infrastructure protection, social distancing strategies, and local and national outreach during a Pandemic Flu outbreak. Access the NIH Pandemic Flu Operational Continuity Plans (PDF) for details.
General information on the Government-wide Pandemic Flu planning is available at www.pandemicflu.gov.
