WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Glacier National Park’s Education Specialist, Laura Law, will hold four free teacher workshops this August. Since student field trips are geared toward the Montana Content and Performance Standards, the workshops are grade level and content specific.
At each workshop, teachers are walked through the activities and hikes that students participate in when they come on a field trip in the fall or spring to Glacier. Teachers will receive free books about Glacier and a free copy of the new “Jewels of Glacier” poster created by Robin Peterson. Teachers will also have the opportunity to win posters, games, CDs, puzzles, books, and other materials to use in their classrooms. This year’s workshops include:
“Fire Ecology”: This workshop for 4th – 8th grade teachers on Monday, August 20, introduces the award winning “FireWorks” curriculum. Teachers receive a CD with curriculum and classroom resources which teach students about different forest types and fire regimes, forest community dynamics, and the chemistry of fire.
“Forest Processes”: This workshop for 3rd – 6th grade teachers on Tuesday, August 21, highlights Glacier’s native plants, plant parts and functions, and inter-relationships in the forest. It includes a visit to the park’s native plant nursery and a hike on the Trail of the Cedars.
“Habitats/Wildlife”: This workshop on Thursday, August 23, is geared for K – 2nd grade teachers and focuses on animals that live in Glacier, their habitats, and how animals and plants change and grow. Teachers see the park’s Discovery Cabin and hike the Oxbow Trail.
“Earth Science”: This workshop on Friday, August 24, is for 5th – 8th grade teachers and centers on concepts such as erosion, weathering, mountain-building, and glaciation while hiking the Avalanche Lake Trail.
All the workshops begin at 9 a.m. in the Apgar area and last all day. OPI Renewal Units are available.
