E-Verify (Online new-employee verification) at the NIH

E-Verify logo

Overview

On July 7, 2008, the new E-Verify system was implemented at the NIH. E-Verify is an Internet-based system operated by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in partnership with the Social Security Administration (SSA). E-Verify electronically compares information contained on the Employment Eligibility Verification Form (Form I-9) with more than 425 million records contained in the Social Security Administration (SSA) and more than 60 million records in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) databases, to assist employers with verifying the identity and employment eligibility of newly hired employees. The use of this system is mandated by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and supports the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12).

Advantages of using E-Verify

The E-Verify system will assist the NIH in reducing unauthorized employment, verifying Social Security Numbers, minimizing verification-related discrimination and protecting civil liberties and employee privacy. The E-Verify system will be used at the NIH New Employee Orientation, which takes place at the start of each pay-period, to electronically verify the employment eligibility of all new employees.

E-Verify Possible Responses

Once a new employee’s information is entered into the E-Verify system, one of three responses will be returned within 3-5 seconds. Information and instructions are provided to the employee on what to do regarding the given E-Verify response.
