National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

This addition to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) career development
program announcements (K Awards) provides supplemental information for
potential applicants on the unique aspects of National Institute on Alcohol
Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) career development programs. The NIH program
announcements addressed in this Notice are PA-00-019, Mentored Research
Scientist Development Award (K01), PA-00-020, Independent Scientist Award
(K02), PA-00-021, Senior Scientist Award (K05), PA-00-070, Academic Career
Award (K07), PA-00-003, Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08),
PA-00-004, Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23),
PA-00-005, Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research (K24)
and PA-99-087, Mentored Quantitative Research Career Development Award (K25).
All of these announcements are available on the NIAAA Internet Home Page at
http://www.niaaa.nih.gov/ under Research Programs/Program Announcements.

The NIAAA supports only the development, not the leadership, aspect of the
Academic Career Award (K07) and only for clinical faculty to develop careers
in clinical research and teaching. Potential applicants should contact
appropriate NIAAA staff for further information on the NIAAA program
guidelines for the K07 Award.

The guidelines and procedures outlined in the specific K Award program
announcements must be followed closely when an application is being prepared
for submission to the NIAAA. Particular attention should be paid to the
purpose of each award mechanism, its eligibility requirements, and its review
considerations.

The RESEARCH OBJECTIVES section of each program announcement should be
followed carefully during the preparation of an application. Note especially
that differences exist among various NIH Institutes regarding allowable
costs. The unique aspects of NIAAA allowable costs, specifically in the
categories of salary and research development support are described below.

Salary

Effective March 1, 2001 (i.e., applications submitted on or after the June 1,
2000 receipt date for applications), this policy applies to all new (type 1),
and competing renewal (type 2) applications. It does NOT apply to non-
competing continuation (type 5) applications of previously funded grants.
Based on a minimum of 75 percent effort, the NIAAA contribution to the
Principal Investigator’s (PI) salary will be 75 percent of the institutional
base salary or the current legislatively mandated salary limitation,
whichever is smaller, plus commensurate fringe benefits. The PI’s salary
level must be based on the applicant institution’s established salary
structure for a full-time, 12-month staff member of equivalent
qualifications, rank, and responsibilities in the department concerned.

The maximum salary support for the Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-
Oriented Research (K24) is 50 percent of the institutional base salary or the
current legislatively mandated salary cap, whichever is smaller, plus fringe
benefits. The amount awarded is based on the actual level of effort for the
award.

Research Development Support

The NIAAA allows up to $50,000 per year for the expenses outlined in each
program announcement for the K01, K07, K08, and K23 awards. The NIAAA allows
up to $25,000 per year for the K24 Award, and up to $40,000 per year for the
K25 Award for research development support costs.

The NIAAA allows requests for additional funds up to $25,000 per year only
for those K02 and K05 applications from individuals who are engaged in
predominantly theoretical work, such as modeling or computer simulation, as
outlined in each program announcement.
