Historic Bridge Preservation

The Historic Bridge Preservation Program is designed to provide funding to county governments for minor repair and enhanced maintenance projects to prolong the life span of New Jersey's historic bridges. Historic bridges are an important and good visual reminder of New Jersey's transportation heritage. This program will provide incentives to county governments to help prevent the loss of these important historic resources.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has programmed $500,000 in its Fiscal Year 2009 Transportation Capital Program for this program. The program will provide 100% state funding for small scale projects.

The Historic Bridge Preservation Program funds will be available for off-system bridges which have been formally recognized as being historic. Preference will be given to those structures that have been identified as being listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places as identified by the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office.

Bridges identified in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places or those with a local historic designation will be considered, but will receive lesser ratings during the selection process.

Annually, NJDOT announces the availability of grant funds to counties. The county will then prepare a standard Local Aid Application through System for Administering Grants Electronically (SAGE), outlining the intended use of the funds. All applications are reviewed and evaluated by the Historic Bridge Preservation Review Committee. A recommendation is made for final approval by the Commissioner of Transportation. The distribution of funds will be made through a competitive process.
