The Smithsonian Institution announces a marine science symposium in mid-November 2007, to celebrate individual and long-term pan-institutional marine research. “Smithsonian Marine Science Symposium” is being convened by the Office of the Under Secretary for Science.

The symposium will present marine research findings by Smithsonian scholars and their collaborators with particular attention to ecology, systematics, developmental biology and geology. The symposium will carry on a tradition of marine science that began nearly 150 years ago and resulted in some of the world’s foremost collections of marine specimens.

The symposium is scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2007 at the Smithsonian’s Ripley International Center Auditorium in Washington, D.C. The two-day event will feature oral presentations and a formal poster session followed by reception. The expected audience includes Smithsonian scientists, Marine Science Network postdoctoral fellows and research staff, university-based scientists and students, program managers and representatives from federal agencies, congressional staff, news media and the general public.

More than 70 scholars will discuss their papers on marine research findings from the Chesapeake Bay, Indian River lagoon and Florida Keys, Mesoamerican Barrier Reef in Belize, the Atlantic and Pacific coasts off the isthmus of Panama, and other international research sites.

Speakers will include marine research leaders, collaborators and fellows from the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce, Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems Program, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the Office of the Under Secretary for Science.

Results will be disseminated to scholars and the public through publication of the symposium proceedings volume in the Smithsonian Contributions to Marine Science series by SI Scholarly Press, Web sites, and the news media.
