Mission and Purpose

Who We Are

The Oasis Sanctuary is a Rescue and Retirement facility for exotic birds, predominantly CITES I and II endangered birds. We offer birds a stable and loving home for the duration of their natural lives. We do not sell or breed birds. Nor do we offer birds for adoption.

The Oasis Sanctuary is proud to be the first exotic bird sanctuary to receive dual accreditation from the American Sanctuary Association (ASA) and The Association of Sanctuaries (TAOS).

The Oasis Sanctuary was incorporated in the State of Arizona on May 22, 1997. We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Our Federal EIN number is 86-0885646. We are also registered with the Secretary of State in Arizona as a recognized charity.

Our Objectives
  • To provide permanent Sanctuary to any Psittacines (parrot-type birds) who have no fatal, contagious disease but are otherwise unplaceable in homes;
  • To develop and build naturalistic habitats (free-flights) for the birds in residence at The Oasis Sanctuary.
  • To continue working with bona fide avian and animal welfare organizations in an effort to ensure that every parrot in captivity has a safe and loving home and that the remaining wild population is protected from commercial exploitation;
  • To educate the public about Psittacines, their proper care in captivity and their place in the wild;
Our Residents

Many of The Oasis birds come from other rehabilitation and/or adoption programs where qualified personnel have determined that it is not in the bird's best interests to be placed in private homes. Some of our birds have "special needs", are physically handicapped or challenged requiring unique living or feeding situations. Others have been bounced from home to home, often being physically and/or emotionally abused and have simply become too fearful of people to be companions to people any longer.

A number of The Oasis birds are retired breeders, or other birds originally imported for production purposes, who, due to age, infirmity or temperament would often be facing euthanasia. Because many of our birds are not interested in or are incapable of human interaction, they are housed with the same or similar, compatible species in non-breeding pairs or small flocks in large flight cages.

Of course, The Oasis Sanctuary also is home to a small number of perfectly "normal", healthy and contented birds, whose owners brought them here when life changes precluded them from continuing to care for their beloved companions. We accept birds whose owners have passed away or gone to nursing homes, when they are willed to The Oasis, or when the request is made by family members. These people recognize that the stability of perpetual care at our facility, with companionship of both people and other birds, is preferable to the possibility of being bounced from home to home over the long lifetime of the bird.

Where We Are

After years of searching, in September 2000 The Oasis Sanctuary realized a primary dream by acquiring and moving to a 71-acre parcel of land in the small community of Cascabel, located near the town of Benson in Southeastern Arizona. The temperate climate allows the healthy and able-bodied birds in our flock to be outdoors year round. The land contains a 21-acre non-productive pecan orchard. The deciduous trees provide a canopy of shade during the summer months and allow sunlight in winter. Birds with special needs and those who require more human interaction are kept indoors in our 1300 square foot bird building.

How You Can Help

The Oasis Sanctuary is funded solely through Donations. Although our greatest need is for General Operating Funds, you may specify that your contribution be used exclusively for our Aviary Fund to help with the construction of outdoor free-flights and needed buildings for the care and housing of the birds, or you may specify that your money be used for Veterinary Care.

Memberships help support the daily care of the birds: food, housing and veterinary care.

Annual Sponsorship of an Oasis bird gives your donation a more personal touch. You will receive a photo of a wonderful and special bird, its story, as well as periodic updates and new photos. Pictures of the sponsored birds along with the names of their sponsors are on our website.
Visitors Welcome By Appointment Only.
There is a suggested minimum donation of $10 per person.
Call Sybil at 520-212-4737 to get on our Calendar.

As a token of our appreciation for their support, all donors of cash, goods and/or services, as well as all members, are listed on our website (unless they request otherwise).

The Oasis relies on you for support, so why not donate now?
