On December 3, 2008, John Hughes of the West Texas Suboffice assisted in the development and implementation of a certified prescribed burn manager school held at Wildcat Bluff Nature Center in Amarillo, Texas.  Cooperators included Wildcat Bluff Nature Center, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Texas Panhandle Prescribed Burning Association, and Llano Fire Management, LLC.  The school included a review of fire ecology on the Southern Great Plains, presentations on rules and regulations pertaining to prescribed fire, and S-130 and S-190 National Wildfire Coordinating Group coursework.  The field exercise portion of the school consisted of a 145 acre prescribed burn on Wildcat Bluff Nature Center property cost-shared in part by the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program.  Mr. Hughes gave a presentation on the use of prescribed fire as a habitat management tool, and its applicability to the restoration of habitats for declining species.    A total of 15 students enrolled in the school.
