KOYUKUK/NOWITNA:Inspiring a New Appreciation for Local Plants.
Alaska Region, August 20, 2008
Print Friendly Version

Throughout the summer of 2008, five wild plant workshops were held in the rural villages of Koyukuk, Nulato, Ruby, and Galena.  Staff from Koyukuk/Nowitna Refuge teamed up with the Tribal Offices in each village to plan the workshops.  The workshops included lots of hands-on activities (and tasty plant snacks) covering such topics as: plant identification basics and local plant identification, edible plants (and recipes), medicinal uses, native names, and traditional uses.  Each workshop was attended by about 15-20 enthusiastic residents, and participants went home with medicinal oils, teas, recipes, and a new appreciation for the plants in their environment.
