Studies in Oklahoma and New Mexico have shown that mortality from fence collisions is a considerable percentage of lesser prairie-chicken (LPC) losses.  Researchers have developed a low-cost method to mark fences to increase their visibility to LPCs and other grassland birds.  The Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program in NM has developed a fence marking initiative to facilitate the marking of fences to reduce fence collision-related mortality, as part of on-going efforts to help prevent the need to list the bird as a federally threatened species.  This Private Lands Agreement will fund the installation of vinyl siding undersill fence markers on approximately 9.8 miles of barbed wire fences in the heart of the LPC population in Milnesand, NM.  The fence markers will result in the enhancement of approximately 650.8 acres of grassland and shinnery oak-bluestem habitat in eastern New Mexico.  Some fences were marked during the seventh Annual Prairie Chicken Festival.
