Jason F. Roesner of the Arlington Ecological Service’s East Texas Sub-office assisted Texas Cooperative Extension with its 8^th Annual Agricultural Field Day on May 16, 2008.  Approximately 200 students from Brookland, West Sabine and Hemphill elementary schools were given a hands-on introduction to subjects including horse shoeing, poultry and cattle management, wildlife, cotton farming, forestry and water quality.  Participating agencies/organizations included the Service, U. S. Forest Service, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, University of Arkansas, The Campbell Group, Texas Department of Agriculture, Private Educators and many dedicated volunteers.   Jason and a member of the U.S. Forest Service staffed a wildlife station and discussed subjects such as red-cockaded woodpecker management in East Texas, identification of skulls and pelts, and the benefits of prescribed burning to wildlife.  Most students were unaware of the positive impacts that result from prescribed burning on the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas.  In total, the students left the event with a better understanding of wildlife and forest management efforts and resulting benefits.
